ICT Decision-makers' Behaviour towards Cloud

- Report Highlights Nine Major After-shocks Compelling Organisations

Almost nine tenths of ICT decision-makers are changing their cloud buying behaviour as a direct result of Edward Snowden's allegations of large scale clandestine cyber-surveillance, a study published on March 31 by NTT Communications claims.
NSA Aftershocks: How Snowden has Changed IT Decision-Makers' Approach to the Cloud is based on a survey of 1,000 ICT decision-makers from France, Germany, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the USA. The study highlights nine after-shocks from Snowden's revelations, which are compelling companies to rethink how they use cloud computing:

1.   Almost nine in ten (88 percent) ICT decision-makers are changing their cloud buying behaviour, with over one in three (38 percent) amending their procurement conditions for cloud providers
2.   Only 5 percent of respondents believe location does not matter when it comes to storing company data
3.   More than three in ten (31 percent) ICT decision-makers are moving data to locations where the business knows it will be safe
4.   Around six in ten (62 percent) of those not currently using cloud feel the revelations have prevented them from moving their ICT into the cloud
5.   ICT decision-makers now prefer buying a cloud service which is located in their own region, especially EU respondents (97 percent) and US respondents (92 percent)
6.   Just over half (52 percent) are carrying out greater due diligence on cloud providers than ever before
7.   One in six (16 percent) is delaying or cancelling contracts with cloud service providers
8.   More than four fifths (84 percent) feel they need more training on data protection laws
9.   82 percent of all ICT decision-makers globally agree with proposals by Angela Merkel for separating data networks

Len Padilla, Vice President Product Strategy, NTT Communications in Europe, said: "Our findings show that the NSA allegations have hardened ICT decision-makers' attitudes towards cloud computing, whether it is modifying procurement policies, scrutinising potential suppliers or taking a heightened interest in where their data is stored."

He continued: "Despite the scandal and global security threat, business executives need to remember that cloud platforms do help firms become more agile, and do help foster technology innovation, even in the most risk-averse organisations. ICT decision-makers are working hard to find ways to retain those benefits and protect the organisation against being compromised in any way. There is optimism that the industry can solve these issues through restricting data movement and encryption of data."

Methodology
NTT Communications commissioned market research firm Vanson Bourne to carry out an extensive survey of 1,000 IT decision-makers from the UK (200 respondents), France (200 respondents), Germany (200 respondents), Hong Kong (100 respondents), and the USA (300 respondents), in February and March 2014.  Sixty percent of respondents were drawn from businesses with 1,000 employees or more, representing sectors including financial services, retail, manufacturing, professional services, IT, and energy.

NSA Aftershocks: How Snowden has Changed IT Decision-Makers' Approach to the Cloud is based on a survey of 1,000 ICT decision-makers from France, Germany, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and the USA.  The study highlights nine after-shocks from Snowden's revelations, which are compelling companies to rethink how they use cloud computing:

1.  Almost nine in ten (88 percent) ICT decision-makers are changing their cloud buying behaviour, with over one in three (38 percent) amending their procurement conditions for cloud providers

Hong Kong Companies More Conscious of Security after NSA Allegation
Taylor Man, Executive Vice President, Cloud Business Division of NTT Com Asia Limited (http://www.hk.ntt.com/en/about-us/our-company/about-ntt-com-asia.html ) said, "The NSA allegation has had a broad impact on the ICT industry. Many companies are more conscious of the systems' security and have changed how they manage their cloud security budgets (76% of all respondents, 73% of those from Hong Kong). Our survey also found that, due to the NSA allegation, 71% of the Hong Kong respondents said they have taken a heightened interest in where their data is stored, the highest among all regions, and 59% would carry out greater due diligence than ever before i.e. closer scrutiny of cloud SLAs. 58% of Hong Kong respondents also said that they would spend more resources in auditing their cloud suppliers' security credentials, compared to 67% worldwide."

"The survey also found that location of the services has become a major determinant. 69% of the Hong Kong respondents said they would feel most comfortable buying a cloud service offering from the Asia Pacific region, followed by North America (41%) and Europe (39%)," he added.

NTT Communications Begins Asian Rollout of Enterprise Mail

NTT Communications and 25 Partner Carriers Agree to Improve Global Network Service Quality during Arcstar Carrier Forum 2014

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced on March 6 that it agreed with 25 of its global telecommunications-carrier partners on a number of policies to further improve its Arcstar (TM) global network service quality during the Arcstar Carrier Forum 2014, which took place in Tokyo on March 5 and 6.

The Arcstar Carrier Forum is an international conference organized by NTT Com to consider strategies for strengthening Arcstar-branded managed network services for multinational corporations. Arcstar (TM) global network services include IP-VPN, e-VLAN, leased line and Arcstar Universal One, a cloud-optimized network service that securely links closed enterprise networks with global cloud services.

During this year's conference, which focused on improving customer satisfaction, the parties agreed to increase availability, decrease failure rates and strive for a number of other improvements. NTT Com looks forward to cooperating with global carriers in these initiatives, ultimately to further elevate customer satisfaction.

This is the 11th forum since 2000 that NTT Com has organized in Japan for partner carriers from around the world.

In discussing this year's major theme, "Enhancing Customer Experience," the participants considered how to improve quality in terms of global network service layout, formulation, operation and maintenance. As a new addition to the forum, customers joined a panel to talk about what they expect of NTT Com and its partner carriers, after which a discussion was held to consider how these expectations could be met.

In a group working session, participants discussed improvements to obtain best practices by studying their respective procedures and key performance indicators (KPIs). Various suggestions introduced during the forum are expected to serve as stepping stones to improvement.

NTT Com outlined the KPIs that it considers most important and presented awards for outstanding quality-enhancement practices and achievements.

The new Cloud (n) services and features will support the growth of global businesses, including the expansion of EC-originated websites for U.S. customers, and offer increased reliability due to redundant U.S.&-Japan system distribution.

Specific services will include Compute (FLAT Type), simple-, low-cost virtual servers connecting directly to the internet with global IP addresses; functions for increasing/decreasing virtual server resources automatically and in real time; Load Balancing Advanced (LBA) for balancing traffic among multiple virtual servers; Monitoring of virtual server components; and Auto Scaling of virtual servers according to set policies.

Load Balancing Advanced (LBA), Monitoring and Auto Scaling can be combined to maintain optimum resources at all times, ensuring efficient management of infrastructure for websites, content distribution and other services subject to sudden spikes in access.

Toshiba and NTT Com Announce Global Cloud Alliance

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), a data, cloud and international communications leader within the NTT (NYSE: NTT) Group, announced on February 12 that its Arcstar Universal One 100Gbps Ethernet interconnection service successfully achieved the world's first practical long-distance transmission of 8K ultra-high-definition uncompressed video on February 5. The 100Gbps service provided the backbone network for a high-capacity connection between Tokyo and Osaka, a distance of about 600 km, in a demonstration transmission of scenes from the Sapporo Winter Festival in northern Japan.

The demonstration, which was organized by the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), utilized an 8K uncompressed dual green format with a 60P frame rate and 12-bit video (24Gbps). A 4K ultra-high-definition uncompressed video transmission was achieved simultaneously. Degradation and delay were significantly reduced compared to a conventional 10Gbps Ethernet leased line, which requires data compression or data partitioning due to the use of multiple lines.

Arcstar Universal One offers an ultra-high capacity, wide-area network service with fully guaranteed 100Gbps data transmission. The service, available in all prefectures of Japan, uses three redundant routes along the Pacific coast, central Japan and the Sea of Japan coast. It is expected to be used for major events requiring the real-time transmission of ultra-high-definition video, such as broadcasts of Olympic Games, and in fields and industries that need ultra-high-capacity networks, such as broadcasting, content provision and academic research.

Going forward, NTT Com expects to steadily upgrade its global leased lines to 100Gbps in response to needs for faster corporate networks and more data capacity. In addition to compatible new services, the company plans to increase 100Gbps redundancy to ensure interruption-free switchovers that rule out communication failures of even a few seconds in the event of a disaster or malfunction.

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), a data, cloud and international communications leader within the NTT (NYSE: NTT) Group, announced on January 29 that it will launch the "Compute (VPC Type)" service, which customers of NTT Com's Cloud (n) public cloud service will use to build virtual server environments connected to VPN and other secure networks at industry-low rates, beginning January 30.

"Compute (VPC Type)" enables a virtual server to be established on a private network connected to a high-quality Internet virtual private network (VPN) or an IP-VPN such as Arcstar Universal One (www.ntt.com/universalone_e). VPNs are virtual secure lines that function like leased lines but share backbone and access lines with multiple users. The virtual service offers instant connections and expansion to various networks. The service rate is fixed, regardless of bandwidth or traffic volume.

"Compute (VPC Type OpenNW)" connects to an internet VPN and "Compute (VPC Type ClosedNW)" connects to Arcstar Universal One. Both can be used to instantly create and use secure web systems or intra-systems as required.

For the time being, the service will be offered from NTT Com data centers in Japan, but applications will be accepted from users overseas. Application is offered online (www.ntt.com/cloudn_e/).

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced on December 11 it will deliver a cloud-based unified voice-communication solution incorporating its "Arcstar UCaaS" (unified communications as a service) and other technologies, which All Nippon Airways (ANA) Group employees will use for highly efficient and flexible communications at offices, airports and remote locations worldwide. Services will be introduced sequentially starting in 2014.

Arcstar UCaaS is a unified communications service that can be utilized on a global seamless basis. It incorporates a comprehensive range of communication capabilities, including messaging for sending/receiving text messages, a presence function that shows a potential recipient's location and communication status for selecting the most suitable communication method, a BYOD (bring your own device) function to enable user-selected devices and conferencing methods, and much more.

NTT Com's solution for ANA will facilitate access to internal and external lines from office and remote IP phones, as well as smartphones and tablets. Cloud-based address books can be accessed securely from mobile devices. A MDM (mobile device management) function will provide remote device lock, remote data deletion and other security measures for lost or misplaced smartphones and tablets. NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), ICT solutions and international communications business within NTT (NYSE: NTT), announced this week the launch of a cloud-based Japanese-language educational service, "Visual Learning .Japanese," in cooperation with the Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute (SNG).

Visual Learning .Japanese (VLJ) is an innovative service based on the effective Japanese language teaching method designed by SNG Principal Takahide Ezoe. The method, which Ezoe has spent many years developing, focuses on visualizing and structuring Japanese grammar with original cards and gestures, and forms the core of NTT Com's cloud-based e-learning study materials.

On October 29, SNG launched its "blended learning" course, combining VLJ (online) and in-class lessons (offline).  NTT Com and SNG will continue to jointly promote the VLJ and blended learning course to educational institutions both in and outside of Japan.

1. Background
In recent years, Japanese companies have continued to expand their business internationally, particularly in Southeast Asia.  Last year, the number of local, non-Japanese employees reached a record high of 5.23 million, (an increase of 4.7% from last year) according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.  Furthermore, an increasing number of Japanese companies seek to hire non-Japanese employees domestically and internationally, thereby increasing the demand for Japanese language education. On the other hand, according to the Japan Foundation, it has come to light that there are issues related to learning the Japanese language, where many Japanese language schools in Japan and overseas face a shortage of teaching materials and learning facilities, while being hampered by ineffective teaching methods. 4. Future Services Developments

The acquisition follows a definitive agreement reached with RagingWire shareholders.  RagingWire has annual revenues of approximately $85 million (USD), and a compounded annual growth rate of 30%.  RagingWire's founders and management team will continue to operate the company as a platform under the RagingWire brand and maintain a minority interest in the company.

The acquisition will more than double NTT Com's data center space in the U.S. which will enable the company to respond to high demand for data center services in North America.  NTT Com will also deploy RagingWire's know-how and patented technologies for the design and operation of highly dependable, scalable and sophisticated data centers.

RagingWire was founded in the year 2000 and has approximately 300 employees.  The company has 650,000 square feet of data center space at its campuses in Sacramento, California, and Ashburn, Virginia.  Both campuses are currently being expanded.  In addition, RagingWire has begun construction of a new 150,000 square foot data center in Sacramento and will soon break ground on a 78 acre parcel of land in Ashburn, Virginia with designs to build 1,500,000 square feet of data center space. NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the data, cloud and international communications business within NTT (NYSE : NTT), announced on October 10 that it will provide Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. with a highly cost-effective cloud platform to operate mission-critical systems in Japan for production, procurement, product development, human resources and finance operations, since January 2014.

NTT Com will deploy its Enterprise Cloud global cloud service and Arcstar Universal One global network service to create a highly robust and scalable cloud platform. Yamaha Motor will use the platform to strengthen business continuity and slash ICT costs by consolidating currently dispersed servers, networks and other ICT systems on to NTT Com cloud services.

Yamaha Motor plans to migrate all ICT systems in Japan by 2018. ICT systems overseas will be migrated within an appropriate timeframe.

Yamaha Motor's mission-critical systems encompass some 700 servers and are accessed by their group companies worldwide. Most of the systems are owned and operated at on-premise environments within the Tokai region of central Japan. In view of Japan's susceptibility to earthquakes and other natural disasters, the company has been looking for ways to lower disaster risks and improve business continuity. The decision to use NTT Com as a global strategic partner is based on the flexible scalability and powerful backup capacity of NTT Com's cloud platform, as well as its large number of redundant data centers positioned in locations where natural-disaster risks are low. Also, closer proximately to end users increases the performance and response time of these systems.

Yamaha Motor operates 140 group companies in 30 countries/regions and generates about 90% of total sales overseas. Since different ICT systems are being operated in many countries, system security and availability levels vary widely. Moreover, the costs of these owned assets are highly fixed. With NTT Com's assistance, however, Yamaha Motor will now migrate its ICT systems to the cloud and use many of these ICT resources on an as-needed basis. Many ICT costs, including server and network maintenance and system monitoring, will become variable costs, leading to significant savings.

Going forward, NTT Com expects to help Yamaha Motor integrate its global ICT infrastructure in areas beyond cloud migration, such as globally standardized managed security.

NTT Communications to Double UK Server Room Area with New Data Center

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the network, cloud and international communications business within NTT Corporation (TOKYO: 9432; NYSE: NTT), announced on September 19 that Gyron Internet Limited, an NTT Com group company and the UK's leading data center service provider, will start construction of a new data center, UK Hemel Hempstead 3, to meet the growing demand for scalable and reliable colocation services.

Located at a 38,500 square-meter site near the two Gyron data centers already operating in Hemel Hempstead, northwest of London, the new facility will start providing approximately 10,000 square meters of server room from spring 2015, more than doubling the total server room area in the UK.

By using advanced green technology for cooling such as end wall injection air conditioning, water-side economization and chimney racks to expel heat, the facility achieves a power usage effectiveness (PUE) of under 1.2, putting it among the most energy efficient data centers in the UK. It will also be the first data center in the UK to offer the option of a chillerless cooling system, which opens up approximately 30% more energy capacity for ICT systems without expanding its power system. The facility further reduces NTT Com's environmental load by using rain water in the air conditioning, generating electricity from solar panels, and using heat from the server equipment to warm office areas in the winter. By incorporating a modular design concept, electric power, air conditioning and communication equipment are scalable in each server room, and redundancy systems can be freely set. Tier IV upgrades are also available as customers require. Moreover, the facility will incorporate security measures beyond the industry standard, including a four-meter-high peripheral fence, barriers against vehicle attacks and fire-prevention equipment installed in each module.

The high-speed, high-quality networks connecting the new facility with other NTT Com data centers will enable the low-cost, low-latency access necessary to effectively provide a hybrid cloud environment that combines on-premise systems, colocation and NTT Com's Enterprise Cloud to better meet varied customer demand and optimize ICT systems. In addition, the high-speed connections between Gyron's three Hemel Hempstead data centers will allow them to operate essentially as one data center, making it fast and easy to provide more server equipment and virtual servers for customers expanding their business.

In the UK, the data center market grew by more than 20% in 2012 compared to the previous year due to strong demand from the technology, media and telecom industries. The demand for hybrid cloud services has likewise been growing and global service providers such as Salesforce.com have increasingly chosen NTT Com's UK data centers. The new facility at Hemel Hempstead will enable NTT Com to meet the demand of this active market.

Nationwide SDN for Uncompressed HDTV in Japan (see attachment for more details)
This solution enables stable transmission of uncompressed high-definition video images between the 128 members of the Japan Commercial Broadcasters Association via a large-capacity and highly reliable network. By using software-defined networking (SDN) technology, it offers simplified functionality to broadcasters by enabling automatic reflection of setting changes, such as the bandwidth requirements of each station according to their program schedule. By centrally managing the network, the technology flexibly and efficiently manages traffic to ensure the flawless and timely transmission of vast amounts of data between stations.

NTT Com to Acquire Maximum 91.2% Stake in Arkadin
NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), Arkadin International SAS (Arkadin) and AXA Private Equity jointly announce on August 5 that they have entered into exclusive negotiations over NTT Com's acquisition of a majority stake in Arkadin, the world's third-largest collaboration service provider (1). The agreement will be implemented after the necessary notification and consultation with the relevant works council. The management of Arkadin will reinvest alongside NTT Com. The agreement remains subject to the authorization of the antitrust authorities.

*(1) A collaboration service provider is a company that provides a full range of services and solutions using audio, web and video channels to enable organizations to communicate with each other remotely.

Arkadin offers a wide range of conference-related solutions covering audio, web, video conferencing and unified communications services. It serves approximately 37,000 customers in 32 countries, including France, Germany, the UK, USA, Australia, China, Singapore and Japan. The company was launched in 2001 by CEO, Olivier de Puymorin.

Since AXA Private Equity's investment in 2012, Arkadin has experienced double digit revenue growth and has been able to reinforce its leading market position through a number of significant developments, including the acquisition of video conference specialist, Novasight.

NTT Communications Deploys 100Gbps Digital Coherent Technology on Transpacific Submarine Cable

- PC-1 Cable System's Capacity Increased More than 2.5 Times to 8.4 Tbps -

NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) announced on July 17 the world's first deployment of 100 Gbps digital coherent technology on a transpacific submarine cable system linking the U.S. and Japan, increasing the design capacity of the company's PC-1 system by more than 2.5 times to 8.4 terabits per second, effective immediately.

Data traffic has been growing rapidly due to the increased use of smartphones and tablets, music/video downloading, cloud computing and services such as social networking. In response, NTT Com demonstrated 100 Gbps optical transmission using digital coherent technology on the company's U.S.-Japan route in October 2011. But despite the technology's attractiveness as a method for rapidly expanding optical network capacity, it initially was difficult to provide stable 100 Gbps communication over long distances due to the characteristics of light. By optically optimizing the PC-1's network architecture, including with strategically placed optical repeaters and an enhanced optical fiber layout, NTT Com has now achieved the world's first commercial deployment of 100 Gbps digital coherent technology on a transpacific route.

By the end of 2014, 100 Gbps optical transmission technology also will be deployed in NTT Com's Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE), which links major cities in Asia via the shortest possible route for industry leading low latency.

- PC-1 cable system
The PC-1 optical submarine cable, the shortest transpacific link, is operated by PC Landing Corp., an NTT Com group company.
