New Year’s Eve Events at 3 Major Tourist Spots in Kanagawa Pref. Unveiled, with Activities to Welcome 2020
The Kanagawa Prefectural Government has unveiled events marking New Year’s Eve and New Year at three major tourist spots in the prefecture. New Year’s Eve countdown events will be held at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise and a Yokosuka park, while visitors could see New Year’s first sunrise from the observation deck of the Yokohama Landmark Tower.

Kanagawa provides foreign visitors to Japan with information on year-end and New Year's events to be held at the three tourist spots in the prefecture -- Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, Verny Park Ikoi Square, and the Yokohama Landmark Tower. The following are three selected activities such as countdown events and seeing the new year’s first sunrise at tourist spots that will be perfectly fit to welcome the start of 2020.

Images: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/release/201912094508?p=images

At Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise, about 3,000 fireworks will be set off in tune with music, colorfully painting the night sky. Furthermore, visitors can enjoy visiting two aquariums and six mechanical rides at the amusement park all through the night. In the morning, visitors can see the beautiful sunrise from the periphery of the breakwater behind the Aqua Museum.

At Verny Park Ikoi Square, there will be a “Yokosuka Countdown” event hosted chiefly by a local merchants’ association. Food booths mainly for “hot” menus and stage events, among other activities, will enliven the festive atmosphere at the site. Fireworks will be set off immediately when New Year begins, together with whistles ringing and searchlights going on. The event themed on sound and light is quite unique to Yokosuka.

The observation floor “Sky Garden” of the Yokohama Landmark Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Japan, is a whopping 273 meters above the ground. The business hours for the observation floor will be extended from New Year’s Eve to 1:00 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Visitors can greet the new year while seeing beautiful night views toward Tokyo from the Minato Mirai 21 area. If the weather is fine, Mt. Fuji will be visible in the opposite direction from the first sunrise. Visitors will have a good opportunity to ring in the auspicious new year here in Yokohama.
Summer Events at Major Tourist Spots in Kanagawa Pref. Unveiled, Refurbished Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum Reopening July 7
- Enoshima Aquarium, Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa Also Ready to Welcome Visitors -

The Kanagawa Prefectural Government has announced the details of summer events to be held at three major tourist spots in the prefecture -- Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum, Enoshima Aquarium and Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa -- from June onward as well as information on the refurbishment of one of them for tourists from abroad.

The rainy season got underway in Japan in June, to be followed by summer. These facilities will organize special summer events that children and their parents can enjoy without being affected by the weather.

(Images: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/release/201906247843?p=images)

At the Yokohama Anpanman Children’s Museum, which was opened in 2007 as a facility operated for only a limited time, Anpanman, a comic character that is in high favor among young children, proved popular with parents and children who visited the facility. The museum, whose refurbishment work is scheduled to be completed on July 7, will be closer to Yokohama Station and easier to visit.

If visitors enter the museum through its entrance where an about 4-meter-high figure of Anpanman stands, various characters on the premises of the facility will welcome them. The museum is full of attractions, including reproductions of townscapes that appear in the Anpanman comic series, and various shows will be held at the facility, naturally making visitors smile.

Enoshima Aquarium ( commonly called “Enosui” ) in the Enoshima district of Shonan displays tanks under themes that change from month to month and organizes various seasonal events. Visitors will feel coolness by viewing tanks displaying fish and other aquatic creatures under this season’s theme. Moreover, visitors can enjoy viewing the ecology of jellyfish by looking into a jellyfish show accented by summery choreography.

At Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa, visitors can enjoy a seafood-based lunch buffet. A variety of foods featuring lobsters, including Paella-style pilaf and seafood curry, will allow visitors to enjoy the flavors of seafood. During an experience-based dessert buffet beginning at 2 p.m., visitors can enjoy treasure hunting while savoring sweets full of peaches and mangoes. Visitors can order main plates in addition to desserts.

Hilton Odawara Resort & Spa hopes that visitors will overcome summer heat by enjoying cold sweets served at the facility.
“Odawara Castle Cherry Blossom Light-up: Night Cherry Blossoms Dyed in Light” Starts
- Events Only for Cherry Blossom Season Aplenty -

This year’s Cherry Blossom Event, launched on March 16 ( Saturday ), is under way in an area centering on Odawara Castle, known as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Castles” and also one of the best cherry blossom-viewing spots in the Kanto region that includes Tokyo and vicinity.

( Images: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/release/201903254594?p=images )

The castle has been selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Cherry Blossom-Viewing Sites.” About 300 trees of the Somei Yoshino variety will be in full bloom in Odawara Castle Park that surrounds the Odawara Castle donjon. More than 300,000 tourists visit this place during the cherry blossom season. The beautiful contrast created by the white of “the Odawara Castle donjon” and the pink of “cherry blossom” has been widely known to be a popular photogenic scene. The events that will be held in Odawara Castle Park during the cherry blossom season are as follows:

“Odawara Castle Cherry Blossom Light-up: Night Cherry Blossoms Dyed in the Light”:
The “Odawara Castle Cherry Blossom Light-up: Night Cherry Blossoms Dyed in the Light” event is being held in the Odawara Castle Honmaru open space. The main feature of this light-up is the scheduled changing of colors of lighting with the use of LED lights that can produce various colors. This is the second year to hold the event and, this time around, the number of LED lights has been increased to 42 (from 30 last year), beautifully illuminating the cherry blossom trees with detailed directing and enveloping the square in a fantastic atmosphere.
- Event period: March 16 (Sat.) April 7 (Sun.), 2019; 18:00-22:00
- Location: Odawara Castle Honmaru open space ( 10-minute walk from Odawara Station East Exit )
With a different atmosphere from daytime, visitors can go up to the 38.7-meter-high donjon observation deck and enjoy the cherry blossom light-up in the Honmaru open space below combined with the beautiful night view of Odawara City and of Sagami Bay.
- Entrance fee: Adult 500 yen, elementary and junior high school students 200 yen each

Cherry Blossom Viewing in “Kotatsu” at Odawara Castle:
Seats with “kotatsu” ( a small table with an electric heater underneath ) are once again in place in Odawara Castle Park this year! The number of kotatsu seats has been significantly increased to 6 tables making up 24 seats ( from 2 tables making up 8 seats last year ). So visitors can fully enjoy the cherry blossoms day and night even on a cold day. In the area where the kotatsu are placed, various kinds of food and drinks are on sale, such as “Jinenjo-bo” which is characterized by the soft texture of white fish and yam, or “Saba-bo” -- the fragrantly grilled ground mackerel, "junmai-shu” ( sake made from rice alone ) from 13 sake breweries in Kanagawa, the “Nama Sakura Ale” known to have been made by sakura liquor, Shonan Gold Ale, etc.
