ADEKA's Intumescent-type Flame Retardant "ADK STAB FP-2000" Series Gets First UL Verified Mark of Functional Material
ADEKA CORPORATION announced on July 24 that its phosphorus flame retardant series "ADK STAB FP-2000" received the first UL Marketing Claim Verification and UL Verified Mark in the field of performance materials from UL, a global safety science organization, in April. The mark claims that the ADK STAB FP-2000 series produced 99% less smoke density and 89% less carbon monoxide (CO) emissions under flaming conditions as compared to Bromide-Treated Polypropylene (PP). The UL Verified Mark demonstrates that UL has verified a specific marketing claim through independent, repeatable and science-based assessments. UL's verification provides objective credibility to the accuracy of the marketing messages by manufacturers. In the ADEKA project, UL tested two groups of samples with V-0 (1.6 mm) flammability which are prepared with PP containing the flame retardant of the FP-2000 series and bromine flame retardants, respectively. The test results demonstrated that smoke generation had decreased by 99% and CO emissions had decreased by 89% in the PP samples with the FP-2000 series flame retardant as compared to the PP samples containing the brominate flame retardant. The characteristics of low smoke and CO emissions highly improve safety during fire.

  ADEKA Corporation, polymer additives  manufacturer in Japan, announced on February 13 that it will  participate  in International Polyolefins Conference 2014, "The  Polyolefin Renaissance", which will be held on February 23  -  26 at Hilton Houston North, Houston, Texas.
  In this conference, ADEKA will introduce  ADK  stabilizer  PEP-36A, a phosphite process stabilizer for polyolefins, which shows great advantages for polyolefin stabilization.  The fast reactivity of ADK stabilizer  PEP-36A enables the product to perform even under severe thermal process conditions  such as rotomolding  and for extended periods of time. The presentation will start from 1:30 pm, Feb. 25 at SALON B.
  ADK stabilizer  PEP-36A has been produced at Chinese plant, ADEKA Fine Chemical (Changshu), where other high performance antioxidants have been on stream also.

ADEKA Group to Join Interplastica 2014 Trade Fair

ADEKA Palmarole SAS, the French subsidiary of ADEKA Corporation, will join the International Trade Fair Plastics and Rubber (Interplastica 2014), a plastics and rubber industry fair to be held at the Expocentre in Moscow, Russia. The fair takes place on Jan. 28-31, 2014, and ADEKA will exhibit its products at Hall 8.1, Booth 8.1.B35. Interplastica, which will be held for the 17th time, is now known as one of the largest trade fairs for the industry in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independence States (CIS) region.

At the fair, we will introduce some new products, including ADK STAB LA-81 (novel NO-Alkyl HALS for polyolefin) and ADK STAB LA-1000 (high heat resistant UVA for polycarbonate), along with a wide range of products like antioxidants, light stabilizers, nucleating and clarifying agents, flame retardants and other specialty products.

Russia's gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow by 3.7% this year. Based on this strong development, we regard the country and the CIS nations as the most promising markets.

ADEKA Expands One-Pack Plant in Abu Dhabi

ADEKA Corporation has decided to expand capacity of one-pack additive blends for polyolefin at the ADEKA Al Ghurair Additives LLC (AAA) site located in Abu Dhabi. Production capacity will be increased from 3,500 t/y to 6,500 t/y and is expected to start up in mid- 2014.

AAA was established in the UAE in April 2011 with the intention to produce and supply polymer additives to customers in the Middle East region. With a strong cost-competitive raw material position, ADEKA regards the Middle East region as an important market with high growth potential. In recognition of this, ADEKA is investing in the region and expanding production capacity.

The Polymer Additives division is one of ADEKA's core businesses and following accelerated global expansion, now has offices or production facilities at 15 sites in 12 countries, including Japan, the U.S., China and France as well as the Middle East, and ADEKA continues to plan future investments.

ADEKA Develops New Additive for Copper Plating: Single-component Additive for TSV Filling

ADEKA Corporation has developed a new single-component type additive for TSV (Through Silicone Via) copper plating that will bring a reduction in costs, prevent defects and is very versatile. (http://www.adeka.co.jp/en/news/2013/pdf/131011.pdf)
The TSV copper plating materials field is anticipated to be a 10 billion yen market from 2017, where additives will occupy around 5 billion yen. We aim to acquire a market share of 50% by establishing the new additive system.

Semiconductor manufacturers have recently been attempting to achieve a smaller size and higher performance of devices by stacking multiple chips into the 3D structure. TSV technology is indispensable in creating these 3D structures, considering benefits of the shortest and high-density connections. TSV electrodes provide vertical electrical connections that pass internally through semiconductor chips. The development of TSV-based 3D structures involves key technologies such as the formation of via (a small hole a few micrometers to a few tens of micrometers in diameter) and via filling with conductors. Via filling technique based on copper electroplating draws attention as one of the most important technologies for electrode formation.

In the copper filling process, TSV via must be perfectly filled without voids or seams for a reliable electrical connection. Copper sulfate plating solution for copper plating contains a suitable balance of several types of additives (such as accelerator, suppressor, and leveler). However, our newly developed additive is of a single type and gives high performance with copper filling. The features of this new additive include the following:

(1) Single component enhances manageability:
Strict constant control of plating solutions is required at manufacturing sites that use plating methods. This new single-component type additive makes it easier to control solutions compared with other types, leading to a significant cost reduction.

(2) Complete bottom-up filling:
Bottom-up filling (copper deposition progress from the bottom of the via) avoids the occurrence of defects in the filled copper.

(3) Highly versatile:
The new additive is effective with TSVs of various sizes. We confirmed perfect filling for a wide range of via sizes, i.e. 5 to 20 micrometers in diameter and aspect ratios of 1 to 10. Our additive is also effective with via holes of different sizes on the same wafer.
