NEC's Video Face Recognition Technology Ranks First in NIST Testing
NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced on March 16 that NEC's face recognition technology achieved the highest performance evaluation in the recent Face in Video Evaluation (FIVE) performed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Results were released in NIST's Interagency Report 8173: Face In Video Evaluation (FIVE) Face Recognition of Non-Cooperative Subjects.

NEC's technology took first place for the fourth consecutive time following the 2009 Multiple Biometric Grand Challenge (MBGC 2009), 2010-2011 Multiple Biometrics Evaluation (MBE 2010-2011), and 2013 Face Recognition Vendor Test (FRVT 2013).

Innovative Supply Chain Information Platform Will Help Prepare for Next Pandemic
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and NEC Corporation (NEC) announced on March 9 their collaboration for the development of the first ever information platform to provide end-to-end visibility of supply chains for pandemic interventions, on behalf of the Global Pandemic Supply Chain (PSC) Network. The government of Japan has provided US$1 million for the PSC Network, which will be used as seed funding for the new information platform.

The challenges faced during the 2015 West Africa Ebola outbreak included severe warehousing and distribution capacity constraints, limited visibility of the overall supply and demand of critical items, access constraints caused by border closures, and lack of public-private sector coordination resulting in duplicate efforts and an inefficient response.

By bringing together information on supplies and logistics and enabling analysis of supply chain inefficiencies, the new information platform, which will be part of the Global Pandemic Supply Chain Network, will promote timeliness and cost efficiency as well as aiding in continuous improvement.

NEC was the first Asian company to join the PSC Network and remains the only information and communications technology (ICT) company in the Network. Together with the WFP, NEC will focus on designing a logistics visualization system that will enable end-to-end tracking of pandemic response items, such as protective clothing and medical equipment within a country facing an outbreak, helping to ensure quick and appropriate delivery of supplies to people in need.

"We are honoured to collaborate with the WFP and the other members of the PSC Network to strengthen the global supply chain for pandemic preparedness and response in order to more effectively fight the next disease outbreak," said Dr. Nobuhiro Endo, Chairman of the Board, NEC. "This is a perfect example of our commitment to creating safe, secure, efficient, and equal societies through the provision of innovative ICT such as artificial intelligence, which also contributes to the United Nations' SDGs."

As members of the PSC Network jointly advocated the need for more efficient pandemic supply chain, the Japanese government has since committed US$1 million to development of the Network, allowing NEC and WFP to begin work.

NEC acquires grid energy storage and commercial systems business of A123 Systems from Wanxiang
NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701)  announced on March 24 the acquisition of the A123 Energy Solutions business unit of A123 Systems, LLC. This acquisition, for approximately USD $100 million, strengthens the energy storage capability of NEC's smart energy business. An agreement on the terms of the deal has been finalized and a new company "NEC Energy Solutions" is slated to begin operation in June 2014 under the direction of NEC. A123's existing cell manufacturing and sales, research and development, and automotive operations will remain the core focus of A123 Systems, LLC.

With this acquisition, NEC will become the world's leading supplier of lithium-ion grid energy storage systems.  A123 Energy Solutions has deployed over 110MW of its Grid Storage Solutions (GSS (TM)) worldwide with the vast majority of these systems already in revenue service. NEC Energy Solutions, with access to NEC Corporation's world-class ICT and A123 Energy Solutions' system integrations expertise, is now better prepared to address the increasing global need for energy storage.

NEC Showcases Carrier Solutions for Increasing Revenues and Accelerating Service Innovation at Mobile World Congress 2014

NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) is showcasing its portfolio of solutions to help telecom carriers increase service agility, improve revenues and affordably meet rising mobile capacity demands at Mobile World Congress 2014.

NEC's portfolio of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solutions will be a key focus of the show, including demonstrations of the world's first commercially available virtualized Evolved Packet Core (vEPC) and virtualized Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE).

EPC is likely to be one of the first network elements that operators virtualize as they roll out LTE services. NEC's vEPC is already being implemented in Myanmar - one of Asia's most promising growth markets - as part of a national project to support LTE and fixed-line telephone services.

NEC's vCPE solution enables IP functions to be shifted from a customer's on-premises equipment to a telecom operator's network. This allows operators to rapidly deploy services, improve network operations and provide new services in a more cost effective manner. Additionally, it increases the capability to remotely fix technical problems, thereby reducing costs, while accelerating the time-to-market.

Furthermore, NEC will highlight its Traffic Management Systems (TMS) and NetCracker's Telecom Operation and Management Systems (TOMS) that provide centralized control over carriers' end-to-end networks and optimize traffic flow. This enables telecom carriers to differentiate themselves on a Quality of Service (QoS) basis, service providers to gain bandwidth assurance, and consumers to benefit from increased security and a more consistent quality.
