NAGOYA, Japan, Mar. 12, 2019 /Kyodo JBN/ --
NGK INSULATORS, LTD.
NGK’s Large Ceramic Membrane to Be Used in Demonstration Test for CO2 Recovery from Associated Gas during Oil Production
NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (hereinafter “NGK”), based in Nagoya, Japan, announced recently that its DDR-type zeolite membrane has been adopted for use in “the demonstration test of the CO2 recovery process using DDR-type zeolite membranes.” The test will be jointly conducted at an oil field in the United States by Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and JGC Corporation (JGC). DDR-type zeolite membranes are large ceramic membranes capable of efficiently separating carbon dioxide (CO2) from natural gas mainly composed of methane (CH4) even at high pressures and high CO2 concentrations. The project represents the first-ever use of large ceramic membranes in CO2 recovery from associated gas during oil production.

(Logo: https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/prwfile/release/M104663/201903114064/_prw_PI1fl_MC0o741w.png)

NGK’s DDR-type zeolite membranes have pores with a diameter smaller than 1 nanometer (one-billionth of a meter); they are capable of separating small molecules. They have a honeycomb structure with approximately 1,600 cells with an internal diameter of 2.4 millimeters that penetrate a cylindrical ceramic substrate and are 1,000 millimeters in length and 180 millimeters in diameter. The entire inner surface of the cells is formed with DDR-type zeolite membranes that selectively allow permeation of CO2. The membrane area per element is 12 square meters.

Zeolite is the name for a varied group of microporous, aluminosilicate minerals. DDR is one type; it features a structure of elliptical pores 0.36 nanometers by 0.44 nanometers in size. The pores’ short diameter (0.36 nanometers) is larger than CO2 (0.33 nanometers) and smaller than CH4 (0.38 nanometers). So, when mixed gas of CO2 and CH4 is supplied to a DDR-type zeolite membrane, it allows CO2 to pass through selectively, which enables it to efficiently separate the two components.

Since 2001, NGK has manufactured and sold honeycomb-structure ceramic membranes for water purification with a pore diameter of 0.1 micrometer, diameter of 180 millimeters, and total length of 1,000-1,500 millimeters. Utilizing this manufacturing technology, NGK succeeded in creating a large-sized DDR-type zeolite membrane. The membrane area per element is larger than other tubular zeolite membranes, making it possible to reduce facility size and overall costs.

Polymer membranes are currently used for CO2 separation. They have a weakness, though: separation performance decreases at high pressures and high CO2 concentrations. The DDR-type zeolite membrane developed by NGK maintains high CO2 separation performance even at high pressure (80 atm) and high CO2 concentrations; it also possesses excellent heat resistance and can be used at high temperatures.

NGK has been partnering with JGC since 2008 to develop a CO2 removal process in natural gas fields using a DDR-type zeolite membrane, and as part of this recent joint project between JGC and JOGMEC on CO2 recovery from associated gas during oil production, it was decided that a field demonstration test would be conducted in a process that uses NGK’s DDR-type zeolite membranes. The test is scheduled to be conducted for approximately one year following completion of design and construction of a test facility, which began in February 2019.

Characteristics of DDR-type zeolite membranes:
- Large membrane area per element means a smaller overall facility
- Maintain high CO2 separation performance even at high CO2 concentrations
- Exceptional pressure resistance for use at high pressures (up to 80 atm)
- Exceptional heat resistance for use at high temperatures

Applications for DDR-type zeolite membranes:
- CO2 recovery from associated gas during oil production
- CO2 removal during natural-gas processing

Overview of the test:
Name: Field demonstration test of DDR-type zeolite membrane technology
Demonstrator: Joint project by JOGMEC and JGC
Site: Texas, U.S.
Targeted gas: Associated gas generated during oil production
Details: Optimization and performance test on a CO2 recovery facility using DDR-type zeolite membranes (associated gas-processing capacity: 3 million cubic feet per day)
Future plans: Design and construction of the test facility began in February 2019, and demonstration tests will be carried out over approximately one year after its completion
NGK Develops New Power Source for IoT Device, Chip-type Ceramic Secondary Battery “EnerCera” Series
- Compatible with High-temperature Installation on Circuit Board or in Card -

NGK INSULATORS, LTD. (hereinafter "NGK") announced on November 8 that it has developed the small, thin and high-energy-density ceramic secondary battery “EnerCera (R)” series successfully. Mass production will start in April 2019 to be adopted as a power source of “IoT; everything connects to the internet” devices, smart cards and so on.

(Logo:https://kyodonewsprwire.jp/prwfile/release/M104663/201811029931/_prw_PI10lg_alHgXH2X.jpg)

EnerCera is a Li-ion secondary battery with NGK’s original Crystal Oriented Ceramic Plate as electrodes. The Crystal Oriented Ceramic Plate is composed of just an active material and it contains no organic binder or conductive material which exists in a Li-ion battery normally but does not contribute to battery capacity. Therefore, EnerCera realizes high energy density and low internal resistance with a small and thin body and is capable of high-temperature installation. The energy density is double and the internal resistance is less than a half (*1) compared to commercial secondary batteries of the same size. Therefore, EnerCera is an ultra-small/ultra-thin onboard-type high-performance battery for operating ICs, sensors and a wireless communication system which needs large current such as several 10 mA to several 100 mA. In addition, CV (Constant Voltage)-charging capability eliminates the need for a charger IC to control the charge current.

EnerCera has two types: “EnerCera Coin,” a coin type cell, 1 mm to 2 mm thick, for mounting on a circuit board, and “EnerCera Pouch,” an ultra-thin and bendable cell, 0.4 mm to 0.45 mm thick, for embedding in a card. EnerCera Coin is the world’s first (*1) SMD (surface mount devices)-type Li-ion battery which can be mounted by Solder Reflow, commonly used as an electronic component-mounting process, and it has a high discharge current property sufficient to operate devices. EnerCera Pouch is the world’s first (*1) thin-type Li-ion battery which can be embedded by hot lamination (above 100 degree Celsius) used widely in the IC card production. The EnerCera Pouch lineup has a fast charging type, a high-capacity type and a high-power type for customers’ various device designs.

The EnerCera series is expected to be adopted for applications which require high capacity in a small and thin body, such as IoT devices, beacons (short-range wireless communication devices), RFID tags, electronic shelf labels (ESLs), wearable devices, solar watches and backup power of solid state drives (SSDs). NGK has provided EnerCera samples to tens of companies worldwide. The production lines are ready, with 2 million units per month, at NGK’s Nagoya factory and NGK Ceramic Devices Co., Ltd.’s Yamanashi factory. NGK plans to start mass production in the spring of 2019.

NGK will exhibit EnerCera at "IDTechEX Show!" to be held in Santa Clara, USA, from Wednesday, November 14, to Thursday, November 15, 2018.

The 1.2 MW/7.2MWh NAS battery was ordered last August, installed in March, and will enter full service soon this summer. It was the first installation of a large-scale energy storage system in Dubai.

Dubai has accelerated its investment in renewable energy to eliminate its dependence on fossil fuels. Dubai is building the world's largest solar park, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, in the south of the Emirate. The Emirate is targeting introduction of 5,000 MW of photovoltaics (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) by 2030, which will raise the ratio of renewable energy to 25% of total generation capacity.

In anticipation of the large-scale introduction of renewable energy in the future, the NAS battery system was installed alongside a 13MW PV plant in the solar park. The NAS battery will be used to stabilize fluctuations in solar power output, plus other grid applications including energy time-shifting and frequency control. The large capacity of the NAS battery makes it ideal for this set of applications.

NGK's NAS battery system is the only battery system that has proven operational success in the Middle East. The NAS battery is a high-temperature battery and thus uniquely suited for operation in locations with extreme ambient temperatures, such as the heat of the Middle East. The rapid increase of solar power in Middle Eastern countries is driving the need for large-scale battery storage projects.

Overview of the NAS Battery Ordered
Power output: 1.2 MW
Storage capacity: 7.2 MWh
Installation site: Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park (Emirate of Dubai)
Commencement of operation: Planned for summer 2018

About NAS (R) Battery Systems
NGK was the first in the world to commercialize the NAS battery system, which has the capacity to store hours of electricity. The NAS battery system boasts an array of superior features, including large capacity, high energy density and long life. It is capable of maintaining high output of electric power for long periods of time, allowing daytime solar energy to time-shift to nighttime usage. Since 2002, NGK has delivered NAS battery systems to about 200 locations worldwide with total output of more than 530,000 kW and storage capacity of 3.7 million kWh. The systems are being used for stabilizing and smoothing power output from renewable energy sources, for eliminating congestion on transmission lines by scheduling energy transfer, for load leveling, for frequency response and for emergency backup power.

With increasing demand and use of renewable energy, there is an increasing need for large-capacity battery storage systems, which can stabilize the distribution of electricity, and global demand is expected to grow going forward.

In November, 2016, the team of NGK and Schneider Electric successfully conducted integration testing of the interface between the NAS battery and ES Box at NGK’s factory in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan.

The integration of Schneider’s outstanding energy management technology and NGK's advanced battery storage technology makes it possible to store large amounts of electricity with a smaller footprint. This offer is unique in the battery storage market and as a source of renewable energy, and it contributes to reduction in CO2 emissions.

The Conext Core XC ES is a series of central inverters designed for high efficiency and flexibility for battery-based energy storage systems. The series has peak efficiency of 99.1% and its flexibility allows the inverter to be configured with voltage and power output up to 680 kW.

NGK was the first in the world to commercialize the NAS battery system, which has the capacity to store megawatts of electricity. The NAS battery system boasts an array of superior features, including large capacity, high energy density and long life. It is capable of maintaining high output of electric power for long periods of time.

Since 2002, NGK has delivered NAS battery systems with total output of more than 530,000 kW and storage capacity of 3.7 million kWh at about 200 locations worldwide. The systems are being used for load leveling and emergency power supply as well as stabilizing and smoothing power output from renewable energy sources. NGK continues to support the growth of renewable energy, cutting energy costs and reducing the burden on the environment by supplying large-capacity NAS battery systems.
