Akiko's Piano is a historic upright piano built in 1926 that was damaged by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Following its restoration in 2005, it has been performed by many musicians, including Martha Argerich, and has continued to carry a message of peace through its sound.

To carry this historic sound into the future, Casio has been advancing the "Akiko's Piano" Digital Instrument Sound Project, carefully recording the sound of each of the piano's 88 keys and reconstructing it as a digital sound source.

This was followed on June 29 by the world premiere of "Akiko's Piano - Piano Concerto No. 4" by composer Dai Fujikura, presented as part of an orchestral concert. Performed by Sakai using the Akiko's Piano digital sound source through CELVIANO, the work was inspired by the story of Akiko's Piano. The performance was met with an enthusiastic response from the audience, culminating in a standing ovation.

The "Akiko's Piano" Digital Instrument Sound Project represents a new approach to preserving cultural heritage by using digital technology to record and carry forward the sound of a historic piano while passing it on to future generations as a playable digital sound source.

As electric vehicles shift to higher voltages, SiC is increasingly adopted in high-power applications such as traction inverters. Meanwhile, 650V IGBTs are widely used as switching devices in auxiliary systems with lower-power capacity, including electric compressors and HV heaters, and in industrial equipment such as motors and compressors, and demand is expected to continue expanding.

These applications require greater energy savings and smaller equipment designs, creating strong demand for power devices that offer higher reliability, smaller size, and higher efficiency. In particular, inverter and heater circuits require short-circuit tolerance sufficient to endure the time needed to detect and interrupt overcurrent.

To meet these demands, ROHM redesigned the device structure, process, and edge termination structure to develop 4th-generation IGBTs that combine low-loss characteristics with high short-circuit tolerance while addressing higher-voltage requirements. These products increase current density while reducing conduction and switching losses. Despite the trade-off between lower loss and short-circuit tolerance, the products achieve a short-circuit withstand time of 7 microseconds at Tj = 25C, helping improve application efficiency and reliability.

The lineup includes 12 products in the TO-247N package, the "RGAxxTS65HR" / RGAxxTS65EHR series, and 10 bare wafer products, the SG83xxWN series. ROHM is also developing 12 products in the TO-247-4L package, the RGAxxTR65HR / RGAxxTR65EHR series.

IMS Unveils Japan's First Full-stack Neutral-atom Quantum Computer "Shunkai," Now Operational

Institute for Molecular Science (hereinafter "IMS"), National Institutes of Natural Sciences, announced on August 24 that Japan's first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer "Shunkai," developed by a research team led by Professor Kenji Ohmori, is now operational.

Quantum computers are being developed in various modalities worldwide. However, there remain challenges to address for their practical applications, such as scalability and error correction during computation.

Anticipated to overcome those challenges, neutral-atom quantum computing has been rapidly attracting attention from industry, academia and government worldwide as a groundbreaking new modality. Neutral-atom quantum computing uses a single atom as a qubit (*1) and has exceptional features, including:
- Room-temperature operation without the need for a refrigerator.
- Achieve quantum entanglement (*2) (the source of quantum speedup) between arbitrary qubits by moving the atoms (qubits) during computations.
- Flexibly optimize qubit configuration for each algorithm.
- Relatively easy to increase the number of qubits.
- Long lifetime of quantum information in each qubit.

At the IMS, Professor Ohmori is the project manager leading the neutral-atom quantum computing research and development team for the project "Large-scale and high-coherence fault-tolerant quantum computer with dynamical atom arrays" under the Cabinet Office/JST Moonshot Research and Development Program Goal 6, "Realization of a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer." Aiming at practical quantum computers, the team has developed Japan's first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer named Shunkai (see Fig. 1).

A "full-stack" system, as shown in Fig. 2, refers to a system that integrates multiple layers (stacks) necessary for converting user inputs into drive signals for the computing device to execute computational output as its result. Personal computers and supercomputers are examples of full-stack systems. Inside Shunkai, atomic qubits are captured in an array using "optical tweezers (*3)" generated by tightly focusing laser light with an objective lens. Quantum calculations are performed by irradiating the atoms with microwaves or laser light. The computational results are interpreted by observing the fluorescence from each individual atom with a camera. The IMS has taken the lead in developing this full-stack quantum computer, leveraging a strong industry-academia collaboration within the Ohmori Moonshot Project with Hitachi, Ltd. for the software stack and with Infleqtion, Inc. for the Quantum Processing Unit (QPU) stack.

Shunkai will use approximately 50 qubits in its early stage, and will expand its scale to approximately 500 qubits. The system will be partially open to external users for the development of its applications and the demonstration and improvement of quantum error correction (*4). Plans also include collaboration with Yaqumo Inc., where Professor Ohmori serves as a founder and executive advisor, from the viewpoint of the social implementation and upgrade of the quantum computer.

Future Developments
In the second stage of the Ohmori Moonshot Project "Neutral atom-based fault-tolerant quantum computer" that just started in April 2026, the team will operate this full-stack quantum computer to further develop and improve the integration and control technologies, upgrade the system toward fault tolerance and larger scales, and enable high stability and high-fidelity quantum computation for extended periods of time. By March 2031, at the end of the second stage, the goal is to realize a large-scale, high-performance neutral-atom fault-tolerant quantum computer, with 10,000 physical qubits and quantum error detection and correction capabilities, available to external users.

We expect that the external use of our full-stack machine Shunkai, for example, by the theory and software researchers for the development of error-correction technologies, and by the corporate researchers toward practical applications would lead to ripple effects on various fields in industry, academia and government around the world. It is also expected that Shunkai will be integrated with the existing shared supercomputer facility at the IMS to develop into a quantum-GPU hybrid computing center."

About Shunkai
It is named after Harumi Shibukawa, where his given name "Harumi" is also pronounced as Shunkai, an Edo-period (1603-1867) astronomer who established the first original calendar system in Japan. Calculations of celestial motion on the celestial sphere evoke the precise control of quantum states on the "Bloch sphere," which represents the state of a qubit in the physics expert community. With the highest respect to Shibukawa who developed Japan's first indigenous calendar based on precise calculations, this system Shunkai has been named in the hope that Japan's first full-stack neutral-atom quantum computer will perform precise quantum computations.

(*1) Qubit: The basic unit of information in a quantum computer. Unlike conventional bits, which can only take on either "0" or "1," a quantum bit can simultaneously represent both "0" and "1" states through quantum mechanical "superposition."

(*2) Quantum entanglement: A phenomenon unique to quantum mechanics where two or more particles (quanta) maintain a strong correlation with each other, even at distances, and the observation result of one instantly determines the state of the other.

(*3) Optical tweezer: A technique that uses laser light to capture particles such as atoms or dielectric particles near the focal point.

(*4) Quantum error correction: A technique for correcting calculation errors caused by the imperfection of manipulations and influence of the surrounding environment on quantum bits during the calculation process. Because quantum states are extremely fragile and easily broken, this technique is essential for quantum computers.

ROHM Co., Ltd. has developed a 2nd-generation terahertz (THz) wave oscillation device using resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs). ROHM is making the device available via the RTD-EVK-G2 Terahertz Wave Device Evaluation Kit, which includes a sample device, cable, and evaluation board. The kit enables companies and research institutions to evaluate THz wave oscillation and detection in a compact development environment.

Occupying the frequency region between radio waves and light, terahertz waves combine the penetrating properties of radio waves with the straight-line propagation of light. Because they exhibit unique absorption characteristics for polymers, moisture, and other substances, they are expected to be used in non-destructive testing without ionizing radiation, medical and healthcare applications, and high-resolution radar sensing. However, conventional terahertz systems require large equipment and high implementation costs, making it difficult for new companies and research institutions to enter the field or pursue commercialization.

Since the late 2000s, ROHM has engaged in joint research with universities and research institutions to develop THz wave oscillation and detection devices using RTDs. In 2024, ROHM began offering samples of 1st-generation products, achieving substantial downsizing and cost reduction compared with conventional methods.

ROHM’s 2nd-generation device addresses growing demand for improved signal quality in application development. It maintains the same compact 0.5 x 0.5mm chip size as the 1st-generation product while adopting an internal structure that enables output power approximately four times higher than that of the former product, reaching a maximum of 40 microwatts. This improves the detectability of THz waves after transmission through or reflection from target objects, making the device suitable for sensing and imaging applications that require high signal quality.

The device is mounted in the same 4.0 x 4.3mm PLCC package, maintaining the industry’s smallest* footprint. This enables evaluation environments to be built even in space-constrained settings. Compared with other THz generation methods, the RTD approach generates less heat and consumes less power, reducing application development load at both companies and research institutions.

As AI servers become critical infrastructure supporting modern society, ensuring continuous operation requires highly reliable power systems capable of running 24/7 throughout the year. By leveraging the company's proven automotive-grade daisy-chain communication technology in 400V/800V high-voltage BBU applications, the KA49703A and KA49713A help realize highly reliable and efficient power architecture.

The KA49703A and KA49713A incorporate daisy-chain communication technology. Multiple BMICs can be connected in series, enabling systems with up to 55 devices while minimizing wiring requirements and ensuring robust communication even in high-voltage environments. This architecture reduces the need for additional MCUs and isolation components, simplifying system design, reducing component count, minimizing board space, and improving overall reliability. The compact QFP-48 package (7 mm x 7 mm) also helps address the stringent space constraints found in AI server BBUs. Combined with high-precision voltage measurement accuracy of plus or minus 2.9 mV, the device enhances both monitoring performance and safety in next-generation power systems.

AI-server BBUs and large-scale ESS installations contain numerous lithium-ion cells and are often transported over long distances by ship or truck. Minimizing power consumption during transportation and storage is therefore essential. However, conventional ICs incorporating daisy-chain communication typically exhibit increased shutdown current, leading to battery drain during storage and transport. To solve this issue, the KA49713A incorporates a dedicated transportation and storage mode that reduces shutdown current to less than 0.1 microampere. This significantly minimizes battery depletion during transportation and storage, extends allowable storage periods, reduces recharge requirements, and contributes to lower operating costs.

Through continued expansion of its BMIC product lineup, NTCJ will further advance battery-monitoring technologies and contribute to realizing a sustainable and highly reliable energy society. Samples are already available, with mass-production shipments scheduled to start in September 2026.

The BD83070GWL is a buck-boost DC-DC converter IC developed with the goal of becoming a “definitive low-power eco-device” for electronic devices powered by small batteries and other limited power sources. It achieves high efficiency of up to 97% and an ultra-low quiescent current of 2.8 microamperes.

The newly developed evaluation board was designed to achieve the smallest possible footprint for a buck-boost DC-DC converter, a key requirement for small battery-powered devices. By integrating the BD83070GWL with a coil, capacitors, and a total of only five components, it achieves an ultra-compact mounting area of 12.87 mm2 (3.3 x 3.9 mm). As a result, it offers a significant advantage in terms of mounting area compared to conventional buck-boost DC-DC IC configurations, including those with built-in coils.

Daicel Corporation's High Performance Polymers (HPPs) SBU (formerly Polyplastics Co., Ltd.), a global leader in engineering plastics, has launched four new DURACON (R) POM grades containing 30% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. This new PCR-POM offering includes "standard, low VOC, sliding, and tough" grades which enable customers to select the material that suits their applications needs.

These newly developed grades were first unveiled at CHINAPLAS 2026 held in Shanghai in April. The standard PCR-POM grade offers a melt flow rate of 9 while low VOC materials meet OEM requirements. The sliding grade offers significantly better sliding properties while tough materials deliver the same performance as virgin POM grades.

Since 2023, Daicel has offered DURACIRCLE (R) re-compounding service which recycles plastic scrap collected from customer plants. While the previous focus was on post-industrial recycling (PIR) which reuses scrap generated during manufacturing, the PCR-POM currently under development utilizes POM that has been used in the market as a recycled raw material.

A major challenge in utilizing PCR materials is variability in properties and ensuring consistent quality. Leveraging its long-standing compounding expertise and quality control technologies, Daicel has confirmed that key mechanical properties remain at levels comparable to conventional grades, even with 30% recycled content (based on in-house test conditions).

DURACON (R) POM has been adopted across a wide range of industrial sectors. It features high mechanical strength/rigidity, excellent wear resistance, sliding properties, and high dimensional stability. It is widely used in applications such as gears, connectors, precision parts, and automotive components.

Daicel is undertaking further development activities with the aim of expanding its PCR-POM offering to meet a wider range of needs.

The event will run from Friday, July 10 to Saturday, October 31, 2026, in celebration of the character’s film "Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island," set for release in July 2026.

Floadia Releases Automotive Embedded Flash IP on TSMC 180BCD Gen3 Platform

Floadia Corporation (hereinafter "Floadia"), a Tokyo, Japan-based developer of embedded flash IP (eFlash IP), has announced the release of its latest automotive eFlash IP, G1, implemented on TSMC's 180BCD Gen3 process platform. The newly released IP is designed to meet the stringent reliability and performance requirements of next-generation automotive applications.

The G1 automotive eFlash IP integrates a 256KB program flash macro and a 1KB data flash macro based on SONOS technology, offering a highly reliable and cost-effective non-volatile memory solution for automotive ICs. The G1 eFlash process is added on top of TSMC's standard 180BCD Gen3 platform without any modification to the original PDK, allowing customers to use the same qualified PDK while seamlessly integrating embedded flash into their designs. The IP has successfully passed AEC-Q100 Grade 1 full qualification on TSMC 180BCD Gen3, confirming its robustness under harsh automotive operating conditions and readiness for production.

The eFlash IP consists of:
- 256KB program flash (PFlash) for code storage
- 1KB data flash (DFlash) with 100K program/erase endurance, enabling EEPROM-like functionality for data storage

Both PFlash and DFlash are optimized for fast operation, achieving a maximum erase time of less than 20ms, which significantly improves system performance and reduces firmware update time in automotive systems.

To simplify system integration, the G1 eFlash IP includes an internal charge pump, eliminating the need for external high-voltage circuitry. In addition, both PFlash and DFlash provide an 8 parity-bit code for ECC interface, ensuring high data integrity and reliability throughout the device lifetime.

With its proven SONOS-based architecture, fast erase performance, and full automotive qualification, Floadia's G1 eFlash IP on TSMC 180BCD Gen3 is well suited for a wide range of automotive applications, including power management ICs, motor drivers, body electronics, and other automotive systems.
