IIJ Launches API Security Protection as Part of Its "Safous" Zero-Trust Security Service Suite

Safous WAAP is the world's first API protection designed to eliminate vulnerabilities using zero-trust access technology. Its initial release will focus on securing API connections from mobile apps, and IIJ’s ultimate goal for the service is to eliminate API endpoint vulnerabilities with complete protection against zero-day attacks that are inevitable with existing WAAPs.

Many businesses have had to slow the rollout of new applications due to API security concerns, highlighting the need for developers to implement more robust application access controls and risk mitigation measures.

Safous WAAP hides API endpoints from the public internet using an authentication-based, zero-trust access approach with DDoS protection and WAF functionality, freeing developers from vulnerability risks and zero-day attacks for less than half the price of a full WAAP from other companies.

IIJ Launches "IIJ Safous SOARaaS," Security Operational Service for Overseas Locations

This service provides integrated security monitoring and operational management of the customer's environment by a dedicated team of analysts through the linkage of the customer's cloud, endpoint, firewall, and related security infrastructure with the service platform (SOAR platform(*)). Background
Security incidents in corporate networks have dramatically increased in recent years. Supply chain attacks targeting branch offices overseas affect business continuity and even lead to shutdowns of factories or other major operational issues. Against this backdrop, many companies, both in Japan and abroad, now require their suppliers to implement advanced security measures as a condition of doing business with them. - Streamlining and automating operational tasks for security
The service is the first managed SOAR service in Japan to utilize Palo Alto Network's Cortex (TM) XSOAR, a tool for automating security operations. Palo Alto Network's next-generation firewalls, Prisma (R) Access (SASE platform), Cortex XDR (endpoint security), and IIJ's managed zero-trust network access service "Safous" support security log monitoring as default, with 24/7 automated monitoring of security incidents. The range of products compatible with monitoring will be added accordingly.

In the event of a security incident, security analysts examine the alerts as needed. Depending on the severity of the incident, analysts will quickly coordinate information with the customer via e-mail or telephone. Outsourcing customers' primary response to security incidents can greatly reduce their operational costs. Additionally, managed integrated operational services including installation and replacement of security products, operation of service infrastructure, fine-tuning, and version upgrades will enable customers to fully control the security of their overseas branches through IIJ's new service.

- Multilingual support
IIJ has established a Security Center in Indonesia, where the IIJ Group security analysts provide 24/7 customer support in English and Japanese. In cooperation with its local subsidiaries in Asia, IIJ plans to provide support in Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, and other languages by FY2023.

The Safous platform is a zero-trust remote access service that provides application-level control over corporate applications and external "software as a service" (SaaS) access from a remote environment. This optional Browser Isolation function is Safous' proprietary, sandbox-based virtual browser that allows users to access applications and SaaS virtually, eliminating browser-based threats and providing more secure access.

Background
More companies have started using SaaS in recent years, including powerhouses like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, due to the popularization of hybrid work. Unfortunately, these cloud-based systems are critical targets for attackers. In several reported cases, company networks are infected with malware and ransomware through a remote environment, causing a data breach and the suspension of business operations. Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, TSE Prime: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, announced on April 28 the launch of an online sales channel for Safous, its zero-trust network access (ZTNA) (*) service released last year. Until now, IIJ only offered Safous through its group's local offices (in the U.S., Mainland China, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan). However, the addition of an online sales channel allows customers to apply for services without being tied down by a country or region. Customers can now start using Safous, with a lead time that can be as short as 30 minutes, by simply selecting the required plan and options on the Safous website.

This service securely connects users to corporate information resources, such as business applications in the customer's office or the cloud. Safous utilizes robust authentication and has authorization control from a user terminal or IoT device. IIJ has deployed access points (PoP: Point of Presence) for authorization to customers’ specified locations prior to the start of their service. This configuration will eliminate the need to allow users to access corporate networks from outside and mitigates the risk of attacks targeting corporate networks.

Background
There has been a large shift towards hybrid work and an increase in working from home in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This shift towards the ability to work from anywhere can be observed overseas and in Japan. The challenge that emerged with this shift is that companies need to create an environment where business resources can be securely utilized from various locations while maintaining the same convenience that existed before the pandemic. To respond to this need, IIJ released Safous last year. Additionally, security threats, such as cyberattacks aimed at companies' supply chains, are continuing to increase. IIJ Launches New Managed ZTNA Secure Access Service “Safous”

Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, TSE1:3774) is happy to announce the release of Safous, its managed Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) (*1) service. IIJ will start offering Safous through the IIJ Group's subsidiaries in China, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam as of August 25.

“We have developed Safous to enable remote users and IoT devices to access various business resources inside the corporate network in a safe, secure, and easy manner,” says Miki Tanaka, Global Service Director of IIJ. Safous allows pre-authorized users and/or IoT devices to securely connect to internal information resources such as business applications within the customer's premise or in the cloud, under strong authentication, via an access point (PoP: Point of Presence) set up by IIJ. This configuration eliminates the need to allow external access to the corporate network and reduces the risk of attacks on the corporate network. Safous’s architecture does not allow direct access from the outside to the internal network. Only authorized users and devices can access authorized applications, thus reducing the risk of attacks targeting any corporate network.

- Strong user authentication and access control
One of Safous’s key functions, “access control,” restricts access to authorized internal applications from non-authorized users and terminals. Access control can be fine-tuned according to various conditions such as terminal application, location, device, etc. In addition, authentication on the terminal side can be reinforced through multi-factor authentication and single sign-on authentication. This enables access to internal resources from outside the company to be more secure and more efficient.

- Can be used from anywhere in the world, on any device
Since Safous is compatible with agentless deployment, it can be used not only on PCs but also on IoT devices. The PoPs that PCs and IoT devices will connect to will be deployed in eight countries at launch, but the IIJ Group will gradually increase the number of PoPs so that the service can be used from anywhere in the world without delay.

- IIJ Teams Up with China's Two Largest Telecom Carriers to Provide World's First Low-Latency Cloud Service -

Internet Initiative Japan Inc. (IIJ, NASDAQ: IIJI, TSE1: 3774), one of Japan's leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, and its 100% owned IIJ subsidiary, IIJ Global Solutions Inc. (IIJ Global) -- provider of WAN services for corporate clients -- announced on January 21 the release of IIJ GIO CHINA Service through IIJ Global's Shanghai subsidiary, IIJ Global Solutions China Inc.

The IIJ GIO CHINA Service is a cloud service that offers a choice of virtual servers or dedicated servers. In September 2012, IIJ had already been providing the pilot service since September 2012, and today marks the release of the official service. With the virtual server option, customers can select the CPU, RAM size, disk size, and OS for the low price of 350 yuan per month. The equipment for this service is located in a Shanghai data center, and the service provides customer support in Chinese, Japanese and English. Customers do not have to provide their own equipment, which makes it quick and easy to establish a server environment in China.

The Internet infrastructure for this service is provided by China's two largest telecommunications carriers, China Telecom and China Unicom, both headquartered in Beijing, providing low-latency communications. In the past, communications that straddle the networks of both these carriers experienced latency and interruptions (the North-South problem in telecommunications). With this service, IIJ is able to automatically find the fastest connection for the customer. This is the first cloud service in the world to provide this method of connectivity.

IIJ has been operating the IIJ GIO Service in Japan since 2009, and it is currently used by more than 800 corporations. Demand for cloud services in China is also expected to be high, and we have been working on the development of services since March 2012. Using IIJ's expertise in operating cloud services in Japan, we will provide the same level of quality and flexibility in China as we do in Japan.
