Genesis Healthcare Co., Japan’s leading genetic testing company, has announced its plans to expand into 8 Asian countries and regions through the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary, Genesis Healthcare Asia Pte. Ltd., in Singapore. The new entity started operations on April 2, 2018, with a branch in Taiwan. Operations in other countries and regions are expected to follow.

Planned expansion into Asia

Genesis Healthcare has built the largest private genetic databases comprising the Japanese population in East Asia, mainly eight Asian countries and regions (Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam), since 2015. Given that demand for its genetic testing services has drastically increased in the last several years from neighboring Asian countries and regions, Genesis Healthcare Asia Pte. Ltd. will serve as the hub in Asia to offer its proprietary genetic research and genetic testing services across Asia in the areas of clinical and consumer testing.

Genesis Healthcare Co., Japan’s pioneer genetic testing and research company, has completed a third-party equity allocation to Rakuten, Inc. (TSE: 4755) and Omron Healthcare Co., Ltd. Genesis’ Capital has increased to 3.78 billion yen, and Genesis’ post-money valuation is approximately 42 billion yen (*1).

As the market leader in the genetic testing and research field in Japan, Genesis has actively pursued development of the Japanese scientific landscape through numerous R&D, product development, awareness raising via human resource development and advanced education, and genetic data translation into useful solutions. As of today, the company’s Japanese genetic data platform exceeds 550,000 individuals, the largest in Japan and potentially in Asia. In 2018, Genesis aims to accumulate data of 1 million people, or 1% of the population in Japan.

This will be Rakuten’s second investment since its initial investment in August 2017. Rakuten’s commitment to assist in the development and advancement of genetic technology and its useful applications in healthcare is a novel approach to fostering innovation.

Secondly, Omron Healthcare and Genesis have formed a partnership since 2014. Both companies jointly developed a personalized health solution business model combining a genetic test kit from Genesis and digital health wearables from Omron Healthcare. The new capital will further strengthen the partnership as the addition of biometric information such as blood pressure from Omron’s precision wearable devices will maximize the utility of Genesis’ genetic data-sharing platform. By analyzing various data, both Omron Healthcare and Genesis will develop and provide services to predict in advance future severe illness, treatment to prevent the onset of the disease, and guidance on health management. Together, the two companies will work to promote and realize ideal solutions for personalized healthcare.

Genesis Healthcare Co. has announced the completion of a new share issue worth1.4 billion yen for allotment to Rakuten Inc. Furthermore, Rakuten’s Chairman and CEO will join Genesis Healthcare’s Board of Directors as an External Board Director. As a result of the new stock offering, Genesis Healthcare’s capital has increased to 2.1 billion yen, one of the largest paid-in-capital levels among genetic testing companies in Japan.

Genesis Healthcare, founded in 2004, already manages one of the largest genetic databases in Asia and Japan, with data of approximately 520,000 individuals as of August, 2017, and plans to increase its database size to one million by 2020. While Genesis Healthcare offers various genetic testing services to the government, medical community, academia, industry and consumers, it also offers healthcare and disease prevention test kits and IT services under the consumer brand “GeneLife” in order to enrich people’s lives through personalized genetic testing.

Genesis Healthcare expands its Consumer Testing to Asia starting November 17th, 2015.
Genesis Healthcare Co., the pioneer of genetic research and testing in Tokyo, will be expanding its direct-to-consumer (DTC) tests, sold under the GeneLife brand in Japan, to Asia from November 17. GeneLife's EC site will open first with its flagship product "GeneLife Genesis," a US$250 genetic test kit that offers genetic analysis of 359 diseases/traits and allows customers to analyze the risk onset of various lifestyle diseases. GeneLife Genesis will be made available to consumers online in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines on November 17, followed by India and mainland China in 2016.

With over 420,000 kits sold/tested, Genesis Healthcare's GeneLife test kits are the market leader in consumer genetic test kits in Japan. Genesis Healthcare is known to have the largest Japanese and Asian-focused genetic database amassed by its 11 years of corporate history. While directly operated by the founding Baran family, it has recently raised over US$6 million in funding from the MITSUI & CO., LTD and Founders Fund to expand its consumer business. Through its research findings, Genesis Healthcare has developed an Asian-focused custom chip that will allow more accuracy in the testing results for Asian consumers.

Genesis Healthcare's decision to expand to Asia is owed to the response gained by the launch of GeneLife's television commercials on major TV networks in Japan starring Osamu Tezuka, the legendary Japanese comic book artist. Since the commercial launch, Genesis Healthcare has received increasing inquiries from Asian countries due to the rise in interest in preventive healthcare for lifestyle-related diseases.

GeneLife's Genesis, while is currently only available in Japanese, will be initially offered in English for Asian countries. Consumers can purchase kits and receive results online (PC or mobile).
