Waseda University welcomes Professor Michael Dobson, the Director of the Shakespeare Institute, in Stratford-upon-Avon (UK), to lecture on "Shakespeare, Rome, and temporality from Burbage to Ninagawa" on the evening of Tuesday, 29 November, 2016, at the Toyama campus. The Faculty of Arts, Letters and Sciences and the Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum are extremely pleased to host the event.
The Shakespeare Institute, a specialized graduate school of the University of Birmingham, based in Shakespeare's birthplace of Stratford-upon-Avon, is one of the major centers of scholarship and criticism on Shakespeare, and gathers students and academics from all over the world to study, confer, and conduct research into the works of the great playwright and poet. This lecture is being held under the agreement, begun in March 2016, between Waseda University and the University of Birmingham for future collaboration for research on the works of William Shakespeare.
Professor Dobson, a preeminent figure in contemporary Shakespeare studies and Director of the Institute since 2011, is active internationally in writing, lecturing and generally encouraging interest in Shakespeare. Professor Dobson is renowned for his knowledge and understanding of Shakespeare in performance throughout the world. He has seen and reviewed every major performance of a Shakespeare play in the United Kingdom since 1999, producing an annual review for the Shakespeare Survey. As author and editor he has produced many books, including "The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare"; "The Making of the National Poet"; and "England's Elizabeth". As well as writing a vast number of reviews and scholarly articles in academic journals, Professor Dobson has also contributed to the BBC and the London Review of Books. He is well-known throughout the world as a stimulating and compelling lecturer, whose appeal and interest cross boundaries between academia and the general public, as well as national borders.
