Damien Jalet and Kohei Nawa are celebrated for their global collaborations with various creators that transcend genre or format. Their relationship began when Damien Jalet, who had always had a deep interest in Japanese culture, resonated with Kohei Nawa's installation work "Foam" at the 2013 Aichi Triennale. Over the past decade, their collaboration has continued, resulting in a form of expression that transcends the boundaries between science and mythology as well as sculpture and dance.

The latest work, "Mirage (transitory)," is a follow-up to the previous collaborative trilogy of "VESSEL," themed around death and rebirth; "Mist," which features fog; and "Planet

(wanderer)," which depicts wanderers. Dancers from around the world such as Greece, the U.S., the Netherlands, China, and Japan have been invited to perform. Music will be composed by former Daft Punk member Thomas Bangalter, and costumes will be created by ANREALAGE, known for exploring the relationship between technology and the human body. The Fukuoka performance marks its world premiere of this project, ahead of the overseas tour, with plans to expand the project to the Grand Theatre de Geneve in Switzerland, and tour Europe. This performance is positioned as a prologue to such continuous development.

The past trilogy has a loose conceptual continuity, with the most recent work, "Planet (wanderer)," depicting people wandering in desolate environments, such as deserts and other planets. In "Mirage (transitory)," the focus is on the hallucinations and mirages seen by those who feel limited in such environments. Without being able to determine whether the shimmering illusion is real or not, there are those who find hope in it. The dancers repeatedly approach and move away from each other, transforming themselves rapidly, and expressing the transience and eternity of life at the same time. The dynamic stage composition that takes advantage of the close proximity between the audience and performers, unique to the immersive theater THEATER 010, where an overwhelming sense of immersion can be experienced. The organizers hope the audience will enjoy this fusion of space, art, and dance that is brimming with a sense of presence.

Performance details

- Mirage (transitory)

In this work, the dancers change their forms from moment to moment, just like the flickering light, the changing weather, or the evolving plants and animals. Through the interaction of these different forms, the boundaries between seemingly opposing concepts, such as life and death, the ancient and the future, as well as harmony and chaos, are explored. Eventually, the stage, where even the boundary between information and matter has become blurred, will become a place of transformation.

Damien Jalet and Kohei Nawa aim to depict the unknown landscape that lies beyond.

Born in 1975, and based in Kyoto, Japan, Kohei Nawa received a PhD in Fine Art/Sculpture from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2003, and established creative platform Sandwich Inc. in 2009. Focusing on the surface skin of sculpture based on his original concept of "cell (grains)," he has created numerous works that transcend genres such as three-dimensional, two-dimensional, installation, architecture, and performance art. Flexibly interpreting the definition of sculpture, he has created a perceptual experience that opens up the physical properties of the material to the viewer.
