Real Betis transforms Seville’s orange heritage into sustainable matchday kit

SEVILLE (Spain), Feb. 19 2026 /LALIGA=Kyodo JBN/ -- In Seville, orange trees line the streets, offering shade, fragrance and a symbol of the city’s identity. Now, those same oranges have inspired Real Betis’ latest environmental initiative: a limited-edition shirt made partially from orange peel fibres, strengthening the club’s growing connection with Japan through shared values of sustainability, craftsmanship and harmony with nature.

The LALIGA club, whose long-standing partnership with Tokyo Verdy 1969 has recently been extended until 2027, continues to collaborate closely on environmental and social initiatives through its Forever Green platform and Tokyo Verdy’s Tokyo Love Green programme. The new kit reflects that common commitment.

Developed with Danish sportswear brand Hummel, the shirt will be worn against Rayo Vallecano on February 21st as part of the campaign “Green Living Starts in the Neighbourhood,” highlighting urban trees as essential environmental infrastructure.

In Seville, orange trees do more than beautify the city. They cool streets during intense summer heat, improve air quality and help manage rainwater. Inspired by this living heritage, the retro-designed shirt blends Betis’ iconic green with deeper tones drawn from orange leaves and albero, the earthy colour of historic streets in southern Spain. The numbers feature a subtle perforated texture inspired by orange peel and include an innovative scratch-and-sniff detail using sustainable ink, releasing a gentle scent of orange blossom as a sensory tribute to the city.

The fabric itself embodies circular thinking: 16% fibre derived from orange peel waste, combined with lyocell from wood cellulose and recycled polyester, transforming agricultural by-products into high-performance material without virgin plastic.

Real Betis’ relationship with Japan continues to grow beyond the pitch. Last season, the club hosted “Real Betis Week” in Tokyo alongside Tokyo Verdy, met members of its official Japanese supporters’ club, Beticos Nippon, and organised a Real Betis Manga Contest at Manga Dojo Tokyo, bringing together students and professional artists in a celebration of creativity and cultural exchange.

Since 2022, Real Betis has dedicated one LALIGA match each season to an environmental cause. Recognised as the most sustainable club in Spanish football by Brand Finance, the club continues to build bridges between Seville and Japan, demonstrating that football can unite communities through respect for nature and responsibility for future generations.
