ロンドン, 2013年11月20日: 東京と京都は今年のQSベスト・スチューデント・シティーズ（http://www.topuniversities.com/StudentCities）、留学生にとって世界トップ都市ランキングに登場した。パリがロンドンを2ポイント後につけ2位に抑えて2年間トップである。

17位にある東京はアジアで4位を誇る留学しやすい都市である。京都は50位に顔を出している。アジアの中で最も高い位置付けられている都市はシンガポール (4位)、続いて香港(7位)とソウル(14位)である。   

年間QS世界大学ランキング（http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings）を奨励するチームによって実施されたランキングは、個々の評価基準に分類された4つの重要な指標に基づいている：学生の動態、生活の質、就職環境および金銭的負担の少なさである。  

本課題で評価されるために各都市に二つの必須条件が制定されている。一つ目は、各都市が25万人以上の人口を持つ必要がある。二つ目は、都市にQS世界大学ランキングで少なくともランクイン大学機関2校が所在する必要がある。  世界の98都市がこの基準に入る資格を持ち、50都市がランキングで公開されている。

今年、評価基準の数が12から14まで増加した。「生活の質」に関する指標としてラフバラー大学が実施した「世界化と世界都市指数」と、「金銭的負担の少なさ」に関する指標として㈱コムセック実施の「iPadインデックス」が追加となった。

トップ50位に最も多くの都市を占めた国はアメリカ（7都市）、オーストラリア（6都市）、カナダ（3都市）とイギリス（3都市）である。

ランキングに新しく登場した国は ノルウェーのオスロ(48位), ニュージーランドのオークランド(18位)とチェコ共和国のプラハ(45位)である。

QSリサーチ部門責任者ベン・ソーター（Ben Sowter）氏によると: 「大学ランキング評価基準成績で最高100ポイントの中で92ポイントを取得する東京は、その都市が多くの上位学術機関を持つことを表している。就職環境では高点91スコアと合わせて考えると、その都市は学術的素晴らしさと卒業と同時に良い仕事への見込み両方を学生に提供している。」

ソーター氏は続け、「ますます国際的になりつつ―移動―学生と一緒に, 弊社の目的は学生の視野を広げること、また彼らが以前考慮していなかったであろうオプションを提供することである。補足インディケーターは、学生に二つの実質的考えを知る手がかりとなることを目指している:。GaWCはグローバルな活躍舞台に都市の影響力を考慮に入れる、また一方でiPadインデックスが消費者テクノロジーの金銭的負担の少なさの代用を提供する。」

また、結論として、「QSベスト・スチューデント・シティーズは補足ツールで大学に焦点を向けたランキングを学生に提供している。結局、特に留学生にとって、大学体験とは本質的にその場所により影響を受ける。」とコメントした。

Paris Tops QS Best Student Cities Rankings 2014

    Paris has once again topped the annual QS Best Student Cities, a ranking of

the world's top cities for students, released today on

TopUniversities.com/StudentCities. London was two points behind, narrowly

missing the top spot.

    The ranking, compiled by the team behind the annual QS World University

Rankings, is based on five key pillars, which are then broken down into

individual criteria: university rankings; student mix; quality of living;

employer activity and affordability.

    Two pre-requisites have been established to identify the cities evaluated

in this exercise. The first is that each city must have a population of over

250,000, the second that it must be home to at least two ranked institutions in

the QS World University Rankings.  98 cities in the world qualify on this

basis, 50 has been published.

    This year, the number of criteria has increased from 12 to 14, adding in

the Globalization and World Cities Index (GaWC - compiled by The University of

Loughborough) as an indicator for "quality of living" with a focus on the

cities' influence in the global arena. The iPad Index (compiled by Commsec) is

a proxy indicator for the affordability of consumer technology.

    Thirty countries are represented with the most cities in the US (7),

followed by Australia (6), Canada (3) and UK (3).

    The new countries represented in the top 50 are Norway, with Oslo (48), New

Zealand, with Auckland (18) and Czech Republic with Prague (45).

    Ben Sowter, head of research at QS says:  "With students becoming

increasingly internationally-mobile, our aim is to widen students' horizons,

highlighting the appeal of cities which they may not have previously considered

as a potential study destination."

    He continues: "QS Best Student Cities provides students with a

complementary tool to the university-focused rankings. After all, a university

experience is intrinsically influenced by the location, especially for

international students."
