【ワシントン2014年11月17日PRN=共同通信JBN】2014年CGAPフォトコンテスト（http://www.cgap.org/photocontest ）の最優秀作品が、マレーシアのソー・ユー・キアット（Soh Yew Kiat）氏の「ウ飼い漁師」に決まった。95カ国のプロとアマチュアの写真家が応募した過去最高の4820作品の中から、3人の審査員団がキアット氏の写真を選んだ。最優秀作品は、ウを飼いならして魚を取るという中国で数千年続き、消えゆく伝統漁法に携わる男性を描いている。

2006年から毎年開かれているCGAPフォトコンテストは、ファイナンシャル・インクルージョン（貧しい人々の金融サービスへの受け入れ、金融包摂、http://www.cgap.org/about/faq/what-financial-inclusion-and-why-it-important ）をテーマに、世界各地で撮られた素晴らしい写真を取り上げるのが目的。貧しい家族が家計をやりくりするさまざまな生き方を紹介し、経済ピラミッドの底辺にいる人々にしっかりした金融サービスを提供することの重要性を訴えている。

審査員は「ウ飼い漁師」の詩的で、情感あふれるストーリー性を高く評価した。被写体のようなウ飼い漁師は普通、観光客相手の仕事で、身近で金融サービスを利用できれば大きな助けになる。

危機報道ピュリッツァー・センター（Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting）のマルチメディア・プロジェクト・コーディネーター、メガン・ダリワル氏は「この写真は近世の物語と合わせて、時間を超えたイメージをとらえている。神話のような光景だ。漁師の服はウの翼が作る形と二重写しになっている」と説明した。

最優秀作品に込められた物語もさることながら、写真は技術的にも優れていると審査員は評価する。「ピントは漁師に合っているが、背景の美しい細部も見応えがある」とニュージアム（Newseum）のビジュアル・リソーシズ担当シニア・マネジャーのインディラ・ウィリアムズ・バビック氏は語った。

2104年最優秀作品の賞品は写真機材が買える2000ドルの商品券。

受賞作品の30点はwww.cgap.org/photocontest で閲覧できる。

審査員は2位と3位の優秀作品と27点の地域優秀作品、最終選考作品、佳作作品も選んだ。選考基準は技術的優秀性や、ファイナンシャル・インクルージョンに関係した物語性と人々の表情の描写。米国赤十字の写真・デジタル資産担当マネジャー、ジャネット・オルティス・オソリオ氏は、特に3位のタンザニアから応募された作品に感銘を受けた。「小自作農家」と題するヘイリー・タッカー氏の写真は躍動感にあふれているという。「写真の女性にとって人生の厳しさは一目瞭然だ。だけどこの瞬間に彼女は輝いている」と話した。

「ピープルズ・チョイス」作品はCGAP.orgでの一般投票で、インドのビシャル・シン氏が提出した「黄金色の夕暮れ」に決まった。オリッサ州コナーラク海岸で観光ツアーを案内する船頭を描いたものだ。シン氏によると、民間非営利団体（NGO）が彼の船でツアーを企画したが、そのツアーで彼は生計を立て、家族を養えている。この写真は1393票を獲得した。

2014年の審査員はニュージアムのビジュアル・リソーシズ担当シニア・マネジャーのインディラ・ウィリアムズ・バビック氏、米国赤十字の写真・デジタル資産担当マネジャー、ジャネット・オルティス・オソリオ氏、危機報道ピュリッツァー・センターのマルチメディア・プロジェクト・コーディネーター、メガン・ダリワル氏。

CGAP Announces Winner of 2014 Photo Contest

    The first prize winner of the 2014 CGAP Photo Contest (

http://www.cgap.org/photocontest ) is Soh Yew Kiat of Malaysia. A panel of

three judges selected his photo, "Cormorant Fisherman," from a record number of

4,820 entries from professional and amateur photographers in 95 countries. The

winning photo depicts a man in China practicing the vanishing craft of

cormorant fishing - a traditional technique thousands of years old that

involves training birds to catch fish.

    The annual CGAP Photo Contest, which was launched in 2006, aims to

highlight stand-out photography depicting financial inclusion (

http://www.cgap.org/about/faq/what-financial-inclusion-and-why-it-important )

around the world. Through strong photography, CGAP showcases the different ways

in which poor households manage their financial lives and raises awareness

about the importance of formal financial services for people at the base of the

economic pyramid.

    The judges selected "Cormorant Fisherman" because of the poetic and

evocative way it tells a story. Cormorant fishermen, like the one in the photo,

are typically involved in the tourism industry and their businesses benefit

greatly from easier access to financial services.

    "The photo captured a timeless image, paired with a modern story,"

explained Meghan Dhaliwal, Multimedia Projects Coordinator for the Pulitzer

Center on Crisis Reporting. "It's mythical-looking, and his clothes mirror the

shape created by the wings of the bird," she added.

    In addition to the compelling story behind the winning image, the judges

said it was technically excellent. "The focus is on the fisherman, but the

viewer can still see the beautiful details of the background," said Indira

Williams Babic, Senior Manager of Visual Resources for the Newseum.

    The 2014 Grand Prize is a $2,000 gift certificate for photography equipment.

    The judges also selected second and third place winners as well as 27

regional winners, finalists, and special mentions, which were chosen for both

technical excellence and depiction of the stories and faces behind financial

inclusion. Jeanette Ortiz-Osorio, Manager of Photo and Digital Assets for the

American Red Cross, was particularly taken by the third prize winner from

Tanzania. She noted that the image, entitled "Smallholder", taken by Hailey

Tucker, was dynamic: "You can tell that the woman in the photo has a tough

life, but in that moment she is completely in control."

    A popular vote on CGAP.org determined a People's Choice winner: "Golden

Dusk," submitted by Vishal Singh, of India. The picture depicts a boatman

leading a sightseeing tour at Konark beach in Odisha, India. According to

Singh, a nongovernmental organization provided the tour guide with his boat,

which affords him his livelihood and the ability to support his family. The

photo received 1,393 votes.

    The 2014 panel of judges consisted of Indira Williams Babic, Senior Manager

of Visual Resources at the Newseum, Jeanette Ortiz-Osorio, Manager of Photo and

Digital Assets for The Red Cross, and Meghan Dhaliwal, Multimedia Projects

Coordinator for The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
