ワイキキとマウイ島のマリオット系列ホテルでUNITE HERE Local 5に加入する従業員2700人が10月8日から、ストライキに入っている。ストライキはマリオットが運営しKyo-yaが所有するシェラトン・ワイキキ、ロイヤル・ハワイアン、ウェスティン・モアナ・サーフライダー、シェラトン・プリンセス・カイウラニ、シェラトン・マウイの5つのホテルに影響を与えている。

2,700 Marriott hotel workers in Hawaii on strike, impacting guest services at 5 Hawaii hotels

Since October 8, 2,700 Marriott hotel workers in Waikiki and Maui represented
by UNITE HERE Local 5 are on strike. The strike impacts five hotels operated by
Marriott and owned by Kyo-ya: Sheraton Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian, Westin
Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, and Sheraton Maui.
Workers are picketing at all five hotels for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and
are urging visitors and residents to support workers by not patronizing these
hotels. The strike has made a significant impact on guest services. All five
hotels have had to limit or eliminate guest services (
) such as housekeeping, restaurants, pool services, and more.
Guests have complained that Marriott and Kyo-ya did not give them an advanced
notice (
) about the strikes. Upon arrival, guests are receiving letters from management
about the limited guest services. Management is only offering compensation to
impacted guests on a case-by-case basis (
).
The strike comes as Marriott and Kyo-ya have failed to reach agreement on
workers' modest demand that One Job Should Be Enough (http://onejob.org/ ),
despite months of negotiations. Marriott is the biggest and richest hotel
company in the world (https://onejob.org/the-company/ ), yet many Marriott
workers have to work multiple jobs to survive.
"We are the reason Marriott is making billions in profit. Our employers need to
show us appreciation and provide us one job that pays our bills, with great
medical benefits and a retirement pension, that we can dedicate ourselves to
without worrying when we are going to be replaced by a robot or automation,"
says Asami Hatcher, a telephone operator and language specialist at Sheraton
Princess Kaiulani.
This is part of a nationwide strike. Marriott hotel workers in Boston, San
Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, San Diego, and Detroit are also on strike.
