Commissioner General for Italy at Expo 2025 Osaka Mario Vattani has signed the contract for the urgent commencement of the design and construction activities for Italy’s Pavilion at Expo Osaka with MCA - Mario Cucinella Architects.

According to Commissioner General Mario Vattani “the Italy Pavilion, which for the first time will also be hosting the Holy See, will be “an outpost for our country’s excellences in one of Asia’s richest regions”.

The Italian Pavilion will be constructed by a group led by architect Mario Cucinella, a consortium made up of Japanese construction company Nishio Rent All Co. LTD, Nomura Co., LTD, Beyond Limits, Milan Ingegneria Spa, Tekser Srl, Zeranta Edutainment Srl, Gae Engineering Srl, the geologist Claudio Preci and featuring AoR - Yoshiki Matsuda Architects as the Architect of Record.

The Italy Pavilion will represent a modern version of The Ideal City, a symbol of the Italian Renaissance.

For the first time the Italian Pavilion will also host the Holy See, which will have ample space to organize cultural events and important art exhibitions in collaboration with the Dicastery for Evangelization.

“The project of MCA - Mario Cucinella Architects reflects Italian identity in a contemporary and impactful way. It also expresses the values which are at the foundations of our culture,” said Commissioner General for Italy Mario Andrea Vattani.

“An idea of space which is deeply rooted in our tradition of piazza, theatre and garden, and on a culture of “designing, creating, building” based on real interactions between people.

“Our pavilion at Osaka will be represent the excellence of what we call “Made in Italy”, an outpost for our country’s brands in one of Asia’s richest regions. It will be an original instrument to develop our diplomacy for growth, capable of promoting tourism and our territories, supporting the internationalization of our productive sectors, attracting investments and promoting our technology,” the Commissioner General added.

“Designing the Italy Pavilion for Expo 2025 Osaka is a unique opportunity to create a real stage to show – to a global audience – our country’s culture, history and innovation, and also to create a place where connections can be built: for future collaborations, and to reinforce bonds of cultural, social and economic exchange,” said the architect Mario Cucinella.

“In line with the theme of Saving Lives and with the SDGs, the project and its technological and material components will promote a renewed balance between humankind, nature and technology, and can become a powerful instrument to promote, inspire action and establish new synergies for a more sustainable future.

“The Pavilion represents a new idea of society and of the city,” the architect concluded.

“A living organism in which relations between humans, art, the environment and history can materialize”.
