From October 20 to 21, 2025, a series of activities to promote Cangjie (inventor of Chinese characters) culture took place in Baishui County, Weinan City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

 

Focusing on exploring the origins of Chinese characters to promote Chinese civilization, the event featured programs including a city tour of Baishui, Cangjie culture brand promotion, an exhibition of Baishui's intangible cultural heritage, and Cangjie cultural exchange sessions.

 

The series of activities focused on promoting the core essence of Cangjie culture, showcasing the appeal of Baishui's signature brands, helping the city expand its opening-up via culture, and accelerating the development of a nationally competitive urban cultural brand.

 

Nestled in eastern Shaanxi, Baishui derives its name from the winding Baishui River that cuts through it. With a history of over 2,300 years as an administrative region, it is known as the hometown of the four sages and a beautiful fruit-producing land. It is not only a key cradle of Chinese civilization but also a distinctive city where cultural heritage and natural landscapes blend harmoniously.

 

The Cangjie Temple in Baishui is China's only national key cultural relic protection unit integrating a temple, tomb, stele, calligraphy, and cypress trees. The 28-character bird-trace-like script inside the temple is widely recognized as China's earliest historical document, preserving the memory of Chinese character culture for millennia.

 

Beyond its profound cultural roots, Baishui also boasts a standout agricultural brand. Dubbed the hub of apples, the city has over 300,000 mu (approximately 20,000 hectares) of apple orchards, yielding over 600,000 tonnes annually. Its apples are exported to 14 countries and regions, including Thailand and Malaysia, with the entire industrial chain generating over 11 billion yuan in output value. This has made Baishui a major apple distribution hub in northwest China.

 

In recent years, to promote its brand of being a spiritual landmark of Chinese characters civilization, Baishui has stepped up efforts to build Cangjie culture into a core IP. It has dug deeper into the contemporary value of Cangjie culture, kept innovating ways to tell Cangjie's story, and advanced the transformation and upgrading of its cultural and tourism industries, breathing new life into this millennia-old culture.
