LALIGA launches its first-ever Retro Matchday

Retro Matchday
TOKYO, Mar. 24, 2026 /LALIGA=Kyodo JBN/ -- LALIGA will celebrate the first Retro Matchday in its history from 10 to 13 April 2026, marking an unprecedented initiative in European professional football. During Matchday 31 of LALIGA EA SPORTS and Matchday 35 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION, 38 clubs will take part by wearing specially created kits inspired by iconic designs from their own history. Referees will also join the initiative, wearing a special retro-style kit developed in collaboration with the RFEF through the CTA.
Retro Matchday has been conceived as a celebration of the clubs’ legacy and of their unique ability to connect generations of fans through shared symbols, memories and identity. The shirts reinterpret some of the most emblematic designs from the past and bring them into the present, blending heritage with innovation in a proposal that unites football and fashion. Through this initiative, LALIGA further strengthens its position as a competition committed not only to sporting excellence, but also to the preservation and promotion of the cultural identity of its clubs. It also becomes the only one of Europe’s top five leagues to launch a joint initiative of this scale across so many clubs at the same time.
Jaime Blanco, Director of LALIGA’s Clubs Office, said that the initiative represents an opportunity to pay tribute to the clubs’ history, strengthen the emotional connection with fans and project that identity far beyond the pitch. In his view, Retro Matchday is a way of recognising the importance of football heritage while presenting it in a contemporary, engaging and relevant format for today’s audiences.
The initiative will also feature a 360-degree rollout designed to enhance the fan experience across all touchpoints. The audiovisual coverage will incorporate retro-inspired graphics and a distinctive visual identity tailored for television and digital platforms. In addition, a wide range of physical and digital activations will take place before, during and after the matchday, creating a complete storytelling experience around the campaign. The designs of the participating clubs’ kits will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
Retro Matchday forms part of the campaign “42 legacies, 42 ways to win”, through which LALIGA highlights how passion for a club is passed on, evolves and endures over time. In doing so, the competition reinforces its commitment to preserving club identity and to creating new experiences that celebrate football history through a contemporary lens.
