これまで前例のない世界連続イベントとして、国連教育科学文化機関（ユネスコ）とThelonious Monk Institute of Jazz （http://monkinstitute.org）との協力で、4月30日に普遍的な自由の言語としてのジャズを祝う催しが開かれた。地球上のすべての国でそれぞれのイベントが開催される一方で、2014年国際ジャズデー（http://www.monkintitute.org/jazzday）のメーンイベントはグーロバルホストシティーの大阪で開催される。大阪城公園で開催されるオールスター・コンサートは全世界数百万人に中継され、秋吉敏子、ジョン・ビースリー（音楽監督）、クリス・ボワーズ、ディー・ディー・ブリッジウォーター、ジョナサン・バトラー、テリ・リン・キャリントン、テオ・クロッカー、シーラ・E、ピート・エスコヴェード、ロバ－タ・ガンバリーニ、ケニー・ギャレット、ジェイムス・ジナス、テオ・クロッカー、ヒダノ修一 with 太鼓マスターズ、ロイ・ハーグローブ、レイラ・ハサウェー、日野皓正、クリス・トーマス・キング、アール・クルー、黒田卓也、マーカス・ミラー、T.S.モンク、大曽根真、コートニー・パイン、グレゴリー・ポーター、トロイ・ロバーツ、クラウディオ・ロディッティ、オウモウ・サンガレ、ジョン・スコフィールド、ウェイン・ショーター、エスペランサ・スポルディング、ルー・タバキン、スティーブ・トゥーレ、ジョー・ルイス・ウォーカー、それにディオンヌ・ワーウィックが出演する。コンサートはユネスコ、jazzday.com（http://www.jazzday.com）、米国務省、Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz ウェブサイト通じて世界中に配信された。

国際ジャズデーは、ジャズと世界中の人々を一体化するという外交的役割に敬意を表するものである。今年のイベントは国連とユネスコに加盟している196カ国と米国の50州で開催される。シリア、ウクライナ、それに中央アフリカ共和国からベネズエラ、アイスランド、フィリピンまで数千のイベントが７大陸のすべてで開かれ、その中には南極のマクマード基地も含まれる。惑星としての地球の枠を超え、国際宇宙ステーションからもクルーの特別メッセージがすべての国の人々に国際ジャズデーにあたって平和と善意の挨拶として届いている。

第3回国際ジャズデーにあたりユネスコのイリーナ・ボコワ事務局長は次のようなメッセージを出した。「ジャズは音楽を超えるものである。それはライフスタイルであり、対話と社会変革の道具である。ジャズの歴史は、音楽の力が団結と相互尊重のパワーとして、異なった文化的なバックグラウンドを持った人々をひとつにまとめあげることを示している」

グローバルなジャズムーブメントが成立したことを認めて、ジャズの偶像でユネスコ親善大使のハービー・ハンコックは「私がジャズデーの意義についてのポジティブな反応に付け加えるまでもないが、ジャズデーは外交モデルとしてジャズを使って楽天主義、自信、調和のとれた異種文化の交流のメッセージを送る」と述べた。

国際ジャズデー はユネスコ親善大使のハービー・ハンコックのイニシアチブにユネスコ加盟国が賛同して始まった。目的はジャズの持つ他にはないパワーで世界の異文化間の対話と相互理解を促進することにある。国際ジャズデー はユネスコと国連の公式カレンダーに記載されている。

Artists from Across the Globe Grace the Stage in Osaka, Japan for International Jazz Day 2014

                  EVENTS HELD IN 196 NATIONS AROUND THE WORLD

    In an unprecedented series of events worldwide, the United Nations

Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Thelonious

Monk Institute of Jazz (http://monkinstitute.org/) joined together to celebrate

jazz as a universal language of freedom on April 30th. With events taking place

in every country on the planet, International Jazz Day 2014

(http://www.monkinstitute.org/jazzday/) culminated in an evening concert in

Osaka, Japan, this year's Global Host City. This All-Star Concert, held in

Osaka Castle Park, was broadcast to millions around the world and featured

performances by Toshiko Akiyoshi, John Beasley (Musical Director), Kris Bowers,

Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jonathan Butler, Terri Lyne Carrington, Theo Croker,

Sheila E., Pete Escovedo, Roberta Gambarini, Kenny Garrett, James Genus,

Shuichi Hidano with TAIKO Masters, Roy Hargrove, Lalah Hathaway, Terumasa Hino,

Chris Thomas King, Earl Klugh, Takuya Kuroda, Marcus Miller, T.S. Monk, Makoto

Ozone, Courtney Pine, Gregory Porter, Troy Roberts, Claudio Roditi, Oumou

Sangare, John Scofield, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding, Lew Tabackin, Steve

    International Jazz Day pays tribute to jazz and its diplomatic role of

uniting people in all corners of the globe. This year's events took place in

all 196 United Nations and UNESCO Member States along with all 50 U.S. states.

From Syria, Ukraine and the Central African Republic to Venezuela, Iceland, and

the Philippines, thousands of events took place on all seven continents,

including McMurdo Station in Antarctica. Beyond planet earth, the crew from the

International Space Station sent a special message for peace and goodwill to

all nations celebrating International Jazz Day.

    In recognition of the third annual International Jazz Day, UNESCO

Director-General Irina Bokova stated, "Jazz is more than music - it is a

lifestyle, and it is an instrument for dialogue and social change. The history

of jazz tells us about the power of music to bring together artists from

different cultural backgrounds, as a strength for inclusion and mutual respect."

    In acknowledging what has become a global jazz movement, jazz icon and

UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock said, "I am humbled by the outpouring

of positive reactions to the meaning of Jazz Day, which sends a message of

optimism, self-respect, and the possibility for harmonious intercultural

connections using jazz as a model for diplomacy."

    International Jazz Day was adopted by UNESCO Member States on the

initiative of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock, in order to encourage

and highlight jazz's unique power for advancing intercultural dialogue and

understanding across the world. International Jazz Day is recognized on the

official calendars of UNESCO and the United Nations.
