OMRON Participates in CEATEC JAPAN 2014

-First Demonstration of Our Ping-pong Robot in Japan -

OMRON Corporation is going to participate in the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC JAPAN 2014) to be held from October 7 to 11, 2014, at the Makuhari Messe international convention complex in Japan's Chiba Prefecture. This will be the biggest exhibit of the latest IT and electronic technologies in all of Asia.

The OMRON booth is grounded in our key concept encapsulated in the watchwords" New automation solutions for a changing world."It will bring together the latest types of automation technology developed for resolution of social issues around the idea of "sensing & control*," our core technology, in the industrial, social, and lifestyle domains. Our purpose is widespread publicity about the new value and opportunities for people through hands-on demonstrations and video showings.

Feature items at the OMRON booth

-A ping-pong robot capable of continued rallying, symbolizing the new relationship between human beings and machines

The booth will present a hands-on demonstration of our ping-pong robot. For continuation of ping-pong rallies, the robot forecasts the ball trajectory and velocity based on information about the movement of the human opponent and position of the ball. It then "thinks" and returns the ball to a spot facilitating return by the human opponent. Also on display will be the latest types of automation technology applying "sensing & control," to assist the construction of enriched and fulfilling societies keyed by an optimal harmonization of its members and machines. These technologies will be grouped for display in one of three zones: "industry," "society," and "lifestyle."

* OMRON uses the term "sensing & control" in reference to its core technology for conversion of collected information into value. Devices collect information in all sorts of areas, including people's thinking and ideas, physical condition, the location and state of people and things, individual attributes of people and things, and the natural environment. Our technology selects the requisite types of information, converts it into information of value for the person in question, and uses it to control machines accordingly. Furthermore, tomorrow's machines will have to be equipped for ease of use and recognition of people as well as with the capacity to align their operation to people's actions and behavior. OMRON is taking up the challenge of incorporating only needed pieces of information from diverse data and making a wiser conversion into value by adding the concept "Think" (i.e., having the devices "think" by themselves) to this core technology.

(1) Industrial domain (industrial automation zone)

At its booth, OMRON will demonstrate the world's most sophisticated factory automation technology. This technology is designed for ongoing solution of all sorts of problems arising on manufacturing sites around the world. Its mission is contribution to the manufacture of products that will enrich people's lives and societies.

- Vibration suppression technology for smooth and swift transport of liquids etc.

- Visual feedback control for continued and stable inversion of double inverted pendulum shafts

(2) Social domain (social automation zone)

By means of videos, panel displays, and actual equipment, this zone will present products created toward the emergence of societies in which all members can live with peace of mind. The assortment will include vehicle-mounted sensors that will help to build safely motorized societies, along with the latest solutions and key devices designed to lengthen the service life of bridges and other elements of the social infrastructure.

- Multioptical sensors integrating warning immediately before collision, rainfall detection, and auto light detection

- Vehicle-mounted pulse sensor for non-contact detection of pulse, to detect abnormalities in the condition of the driver (e.g., falling asleep at the wheel and sudden onset of illness)

- Structure monitoring solution for diagnosis and estimate of superannuation and abnormal spots on bridges

- The world's most efficient vibration-driven power source making effective use of environmental vibrational energy by converting it into electricity

- Other items

(3) lifestyle domain (Life automation zone)

Booth visitors can also watch demonstrations, using operation models, of the latest automation technologies in the fields of healthcare, living & residential space, and mobile devices. These technologies were created to make people's lives healthier, happier, and more fulfilling.

- Sensor devices mounted with face recognition technology that will serve as the eyes of tomorrow's Internet of Things (IoT) and make life more pleasant and comfortable

- The real-time translation device TranScope, for instantaneous translation of words at travel destinations on a wearable terminal

- Medical LINK, a new mechanism for blood pressure management to support routine health checks, with network links between home and hospital

- Spot-Check Monitor, a device for automatic transmission of patient data for temperature and other items, to support safe and efficient nursing

- Other items
