HC2 Holdings, Inc.（NYSE MKT: HCHC）のPansend Life Sciencesが最大株主であるMediBeacon Inc.（http://www.medibeacon.com/ ）は22日、米食品医薬品局（FDA）が同社のTransdermal GFR Measurement System（TGFR）に「Breakthrough Device（ブレークスルー機器）」の指定を付与したと発表した。このデバイスは、腎機能障害ないし正常腎機能を有する患者の糸球体ろ過率（GFR）を測定することを目的としている。（注1）

FDAから併用製品に指定されたMediBeacon（http://www.medibeacon.com/ ）のTGFRには、光学皮膚センサーやモニター、光のある所で輝く独自の蛍光追跡試薬であるMB-102が含まれている。TGFRは臨床医に対し、治療の時点で血液サンプリングや尿採取を必要とせずにGFRの連続的なリアルタイム測定を提供するように設計されている。

GFR測定能力は、特に腎臓疾患があるか、そのリスクのある患者において高い臨床的関心が持たれている。腎臓病はひそかに流行しており、世界で8億5000万人以上の人々が発症している。これは糖尿病患者数の2倍、がん患者数の20倍以上である。（注2）

FDAは「21st Century Cures Act（21世紀治療法）」の条項にあるBreakthrough Devicesプログラムに基づき、患者に診断および治療技術へのタイムリーなアクセスを提供するため、企業と協力し、規制審査を迅速化している。FDAによると、TGFRのような「Breakthrough Device」は、生命を脅かしたり、不可逆的に衰弱させたりする疾患または状態を、現行の標準治療と比較して診断する上で、より効果的な可能性を有する製品である。（注3）

the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Breakthrough Device

designation to the company's Transdermal GFR Measurement System (TGFR). The

device is intended to measure Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) in patients with

impaired or normal renal function.[1]

MediBeacon's (http://www.medibeacon.com/ ) TGFR, which is designated by the FDA

to be a combination product, includes an optical skin sensor, monitor and

MB-102, which is a proprietary fluorescent tracer agent that glows in the

presence of light. The TGFR is designed to provide clinicians continuous

real-time measurement of GFR at the point of care with no need for blood

sampling or urine collection.

The ability to measure GFR is of high clinical interest especially in patients

with or at risk of kidney disease. Kidney disease is a hidden epidemic,

affecting more than 850 million people worldwide. This is twice the number of

people who have diabetes and more than 20 times the number of people with

cancer.[2]

Under the Breakthrough Devices program, a provision of the 21st Century Cures

Act, the FDA works with companies to expedite regulatory review in order to

give patients more timely access to diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.

According to the FDA, a "Breakthrough Device" like the TGFR is a product that

has the potential to be more effective at diagnosing a life-threatening or

irreversibly debilitating disease or condition compared to the current standard

of care.[3]
