The Italy Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is showcasing the ‘Pino Pascali Experience’ during the week dedicated to Puglia.

The exhibit on the master of Arte Povera (poor art) is accompanied by images introducing the public to the artist.

“Through multimedia and interactive material”, viewers can get acquainted with the interactive installation 'Cinque bachi da setola e un bozzolo' (Five 'bristle worms' and a cocoon , 1968), explained Giuseppe Teofilo, director of the Pino Pascali Foundation at Polignano a Mare. “The public will be able to get into the oeuvre and understand Pascali’s artistic research, actually getting to know his whole life”, he added.

Although he wasn’t born in the Puglia resort of Polignano a Mare, Pascali was closely linked to the town where his parents were born.

“Pascali represents art, he represents culture, the vocation that Polignano and the territory of Polignano have for art and for the values of culture”, explained Mayor Vito Carrieri. The mayor stressed how Pascali actually represents a bridge with Japan, “a bridge made with a population which is in many ways similar to the Italian one and to the people of Puglia in particular”.

And the connection is also concrete with Osaka. “We are aware of the importance of artist Pino Pascali and of his work”, explained Tomio Sugaya, director of Nakanoshima, Osaka’s art museum, and “we are very proud to have his oeuvres in our museum’s collection”.

The love story began 20 years ago, said Sugaya: “We were very surprised when a gallery in Tokyo presented us with an oeuvre by Pascali and we didn’t think it would be possible to have a collection of masterworks made by an artist like Pascali. So we said: ‘Such an important work, we are honoured to have it in our permanent collection’”.

Polignano hosts the only contemporary art museum in Puglia and its activity includes temporary exhibits, a permanent collection and the Pino Pascali Prize.

Along with the archive and the artist’s graphic work, the Foundation owns Pino Pascali’s archive of videos and photos.
