◎ファヒマ・アジズ氏を副総長に　　アジア女子大学が発表

【チッタゴン（バングラデシュ）４日PRN＝共同JBN】アジア女子大学（Asian University for Women＝AUW）は４日、理事会が満場一致でファヒマ・アジズ博士を次期副総長に指名したと発表した。アジズ博士はバングラデシュ生まれの米国人で、経済学教授。現在は米ミネソタ州のハムリン大学国際経済学寄付講座の教授。博士は５月上旬にチッタゴン入りする。

アジズ博士はマウント・ホリヨーク大学で学士号、マサチューセッツ大学で修士号、ミネソタ大学で博士号を取得した。すべて経済学である。ハムリン大学では１０年間、経済経営学部の教授を務め、同じ時期の７年間、環境研究プログラムを指導した。アジア女子大学副総長の指名を受けるに当たってアジズ博士は「私がAUWに引かれるのは、女性にリーダーシップとサービスの神髄を教える大学の使命。私は概して女性の教育と教育機会全般の熱心な支持者だ。AUWはそのすべての価値を体現している。AUWの献身的な教職員や素晴らしい学生とともに学ぶことはとてもうれしく、楽しみにしている」と話した。

AUWは大学を指導する最高の候補者を見つけるために７カ月間かけて世界中を探し、アジズ教授の指名に漕ぎ着けた。副総長を指名した選考委員会の共同委員長は、国際的な人権擁護派弁護士であるシェリー・ブレア総長と、大学理事を務めるディプー・モニ・バングラデシュ外相が務めた。そのほかの委員はカマル・アーマドAUW副総長代行、カナダのウエスタン・オンタリオ大学のアミット・チャクマ学長、インドのレディ・シュリラム女子大学のミナクシ・ゴピナス学長、米国のブリン・モア大学のジェーン・マコーリフ学長、AUWのサンギタ・ラヤマジ人文科学教授ら。国際的な人材発掘会社のラッセル・レイノルズが選考作業を助けた。

アジズ博士の指名は暖かく迎えられた。大学理事に指名を勧告した選考委員会共同委員長のシェリー・ブレア総長は「ファヒム・アジズ氏がAUWの副総長就任要請を受けてくれてうれしい。彼女は大学の強力なリーダー、学生の素晴らしい模範になる。AUWを一層成功に導くために彼女と共に働くことを期待している」と述べた。AUW理事長で、カタール大学学長のシェイカ・アル・ミスナド教授は「AUWはアジズ博士を副総長に迎えられて幸運だ。彼女はAUWで教養課程教育に熱心に取り組む。彼女のバングラデシュやこの地域の知識や理解、人文科学分野でのアカデミックな経歴は、この地位にふさわしい」とコメントした。アジア女子大学支援財団のジャック・メイヤー理事会長は「ファヒム・アジズ氏がAUWの副総長になることはとてもうれしい。ファヒマの経歴は教養課程教育に対してだけでなく、変化や発展の問題でも、彼女が長く顕著に取り組んできたことを物語る。これが大学の使命を活性化する」と評価した。カマル・アーマドAUW副学長代行も指名を歓迎し、アジズ博士は「AUWを卓越したセンターに築くビジョン持つうえ、この機関を時間をかけて一つずつ育て上げるのに何が必要かを理解している」と述べた。

アジズ博士が教授団に加わっているハムリン大学でも、彼女の指名のニュースは好意的に受け止められた。リンダ・ハンソン学長は「ハムリン大学を代表し、ファヒマ・アジズ博士に心からお祝いを言いたい。ハムリンの学生に対する彼女の経験と貢献、得難い仲間としての彼女の仕事ぶりを基に、彼女が成功し続けることを願っている」と述べた。アジズ博士が学んだマウント・ホリヨーク大学学長のリン・パスクエレラ博士は「ファヒマ・アジズを副総長に選んだアジア女子大学のすべての人々に、おめでとうと言いたい。ファヒマはマウント・ホリヨーク大学の名高い卒業生であり、彼女の娘も最近マウント・ホリヨークを卒業した。このため彼女の選出はわが地域の大きな誇りである。われわれは世界中からの女性に教養課程を教育するという共通の使命を果たすため、ファヒマやAUWと協力することを期待している」と語った。

ミネソタ州選出のベティ・マッカラム下院議員も祝辞として「１月にアジア女子大学を訪問した際、若い女子学生の勇気と信念、意気込みに深く感動した。ミネソタ州の人がこの大学の指導者に選ばれたと知って、こんなにうれしいことはない。ファヒマ・アジズ博士におめでとうと言いたい。彼女の指導力は財産になると思う」と語った。マカレスター大学のブライアン・ローゼンバーグ学長は「ファヒマ・アジズ博士のアジア女子大学副総長指名を祝いたい。彼女とはマカレスター大学では米国教育協議会のフェローとして、セントポール・アカデミー・サミット校では同僚として、一緒に働いたことがあるので、彼女が素晴らしい仕事をすると思う」と話した。

ファヒマ・アジズ博士の指名はアジア女子大学での指導部再編と重なった。AUWは今年になって３人の新学部長を発表した。ニューヨークのバード・カレッジの前国際教養課程副学部長で、南アジア文学専攻教授のキャサリーン・ヒューイットスミス博士が２０１２年３月にAUWの芸術・人文・社会科学学部長に就任した。ハミルトン大学の生物学教授を２０年間務めた遺伝学者のジニー・ギャレット博士は７月１日に、生命化学・公衆衛生学部長になる。一方、インド工科大学で長く環境エンジニアリング教授を務めたアショク・ケシャリ博士は、この２年間AUWの学部に所属していたが、物理化学・エンジニアリング学部長に指名された。

アジア女子大学理事会の理事長はカタール大学学長のシェイカ・アル・ミスナド教授。国際的な法律事務所ミルバンク・ツィード・ハドリー＆マックロイのパートナー、ヨン・ジュン・キム氏が理事会の事務局長を務め、国際会計事務所のパートナーのカピル・ジェイン氏が理事会監査委員会の委員長になっている。

アジア女子大学は高等教育がリーダー育成や経済発展、社会・政治的安定の実現に極めて重要であるという強い信念に基づき、バングラデシュのチッタゴンに設立された。AUWでは、南アジアや東南アジア、中東出身で、異なる文化、宗教、倫理、社会経済的背景を持つ若く有望な女性を教育している。ビジョンや展望は国際的だが、地域の独自の特色も重視する。アジア女子大学は野心的な教養科目や応用学習、専門訓練を合わせた教育の枠組みを提供している。

AUW Names Economist Fahima Aziz as Vice Chancellor

CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh, Apr. 4, 2012 /PRN=KYODO JBN/ --

    The Asian University for Women announced today that its Board of Trustees

has unanimously appointed Dr. Fahima Aziz as the next Vice Chancellor of the

University. Dr. Aziz, a US national of Bangladeshi origin, is a professor of

economics and currently holds the Endowed Alkire Chair in International

Business at Hamline University in Minnesota, USA. She is expected to arrive in

Chittagong in early May.

    Dr. Aziz obtained a Bachelor's degree from Mount Holyoke College, a Masters

from the University of Massachusetts, and a PhD in from the University of

Minnesota - all in economics. Dr. Aziz chaired the Departments of Management

and Economics at Hamline University for ten years; she had concurrently led the

environmental studies program there for seven years. In accepting the

appointment as the Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women, Dr. Aziz

commented: "I am drawn to AUW because of its mission to educate women for lives

of leadership and service. I am a passionate supporter of women's education and

educational access in general. AUW embodies all of these values. I am very

excited and look forward to working collaboratively with AUW's dedicated

faculty, staff and amazing students."

    The appointment of Dr. Fahima Aziz brings to a conclusion a seven-month

international search that was carried out by the university to identify the

best candidate possible for the leadership of the university. The search

committee for the appointment of the Vice Chancellor was co-chaired by the

University's Chancellor and international human rights advocate Mrs. Cherie

Blair and University trustee and the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr. Dipu

Moni. Other members of the search committee included Mr. Kamal Ahmad, Acting

Vice Chancellor of AUW; Dr. Amit Chakma, President of the University of Western

Ontario in Canada; Dr. Meenakshi Gopinath, Principal of Lady Shri Ram College

in India; Dr. Jane McAuliffe, President of Bryn Mawr College in the United

States; and Dr. Sangita Rayamajhi, Professor of Humanities at the AUW. The

international search firm of Russell Reynolds assisted with the search.

    Dr. Aziz's appointment has been warmly welcomed: Mrs. Cherie Blair, the

University's Chancellor who also co-chaired the search committee that made the

recommendation for the appointment to the University's trustees, said: "I am

delighted that Fahima Aziz has accepted AUW's invitation to serve as Vice

Chancellor. She will be a terrific leader for the university as well as a

wonderful role model for our students. I look forward to working with her to

make AUW into a greater success." Professor Sheikha Al-Misnad, President of

Qatar University and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AUW commented: "AUW

is fortunate to have Dr. Aziz as its incoming Vice Chancellor. She will bring

to AUW her deep commitment to liberal arts education. Her knowledge and

understanding of Bangladesh and the region and her academic experience in the

liberal arts have prepared her well for this position." Mr. Jack Meyer,

Chairman of AUW's Support Foundation has commented: "I am very pleased that

Fahima Aziz is joining AUW as Vice Chancellor. Fahima's record not only

testifies to her long and distinguished commitment to liberal arts education

enthusiasm for Fahima's  ppointment, noting that Fahima "combines a vision for

    At Hamline University where Fahima is a member of the faculty, news of her

appointment was received warmly. Dr. Linda Hanson, President of Hamline

to Dr. Fahima Aziz. With her years of experience and the contributions she has

made to Hamline students and her service as a valued colleague, we

enthusiastically wish her every success." Dr. Lynn Pasquerella, the President

of Mount Holyoke College in the US where Dr. Aziz had studied as an

undergraduate commented: "I want to congratulate all members of the Asian

University for Women community on their selection of Fahima Aziz as Vice

Chancellor. Fahima is a celebrated alumna of Mount Holyoke College and her

daughter recently graduated from Mount Holyoke as well; thus, her selection is

    Congresswoman Betty McCollum from Dr. Aziz's home state of Minnesota in the

United States also offered her congratulations. She said: "During my January

visit to Asian University for Women, I was deeply impressed by the courage,

convictions, and the commitment of the young female students I met. Learning

that a Minnesotan has been chosen to lead this university could not make me

happier." She went on to say that "I want to congratulate Dr. Fahima Aziz and I

know her leadership will be an asset." Dr. Brian Rosenberg, President of

Macalester College said: "I congratulate Dr. Fahima Aziz on her appointment as

Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women. Having worked with her

during her time as an American Council on Education Fellow at Macalester

College and as a colleague on the Board of Trustees at Saint Paul Academy and

Summit School, I know that she will do a splendid job."

    The appointment of Dr. Fahima Aziz is the culmination of a major leadership

reorganization at the Asian University for Women. Earlier in the year the

University announced the appointment of three deans: Dr. Kathleen Hewett-Smith,

formerly Associate Dean of International Liberal Arts and a professor of South

Asian Literature at Bard College in New York started in March 2012 as Dean of

Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Geneticist Dr. Jinnie Garrett who has

served for over 20 years as Professor of Biology at Hamilton College will start

on July 1 as the Dean of Life Sciences and Public Health while Dr. Ashok

Keshari, long-time professor of environmental engineering at the Indian

Institute of Technology in Delhi who has been on the AUW faculty for the past

two years, has been named as Dean of Physical Sciences and Engineering.

    The Board of Trustees of the Asian University for Women is chaired by

Professor Sheikha Al-Misnad who is the President of Qatar University; Mr. Young

Joon Kim, a Partner at the international law firm of Milbank Tweed Hadley &

McCloy serves as the Secretary of the Board; and Mr. Kapil Jain, a partner at

an international accounting firm serves as the Treasurer and Chairman of the

Audit Committee of the Board.
