Open the Drawing Manual—Skeches by Hokusai or Many More

The Sumida Hokusai Museum (Sumida City, Tokyo) will hold the 10th anniversary exhibition,

“Open the Drawing Manual—Sketches by Hokusai or Many More" from March 17 to May 24, 2026.

Edehon are drawing manuals designed for anyone who wants to study drawing. To demonstrate

drawing techniques to a broad audience, these manuals were also published in the form of

woodblock printed books. The ever popular Hokusai Manga, known as Sketches by Hokusai

outside Japan, is one among many drawing manuals designed by Hokusai. Ranking with

Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji as one of Hokusai's masterpieces, Sketches by Hokusai has

been influential both in Japan and abroad. This exhibition displays woodblock printed manuals

by Hokusai and his students,introducing the appeal of Sketches by Hokusai and other drawing

manuals plus works that were influenced by them.

Exhibition Information

●Visitors may enter all other exhibitions (Education Room — Discover Hokusai and Exhibition Plus) on the day of their visit.

●Identification card is necessary to purchase tickets at a discount rate.

●Visitors with disability certificate and one accompanying person may enter at the discounted rate

for visitors with disabilities.
